VOL. 94 SAINT GEORGE'S, WEDNESDAY, JULY 7, 1976 [No. 31

GOVERNMENT NOTICES

No. 118.
The following document is circulated with and forms part of this Gazette: -
S.R. & 0. No. 5 of 1976:- The East Caribbean Currency Authority Order, 1976.
7th July, 1976.

RELEASE
AT a Meeting of the West Indies Associated States Council of Ministers held in Antigua on July 1,
1976, the Governments participating in the East Caribbean Currency Authority decided (a) to
discontinue the East Caribbean dollar link to the Pound Sterling and to link the E.C. dollar to the United
States dollar; (b) to fix the parity or exchange rate of the E.C. dollar at E.C. $2.70 per one U.S. dollar.
This new parity which has been approved by the Government of Grenada for Grenada and by the
United Kingdom Government on behalf of the Associated States territories and Montserrat, will come
into force on 7th July, 1976. The International Monetary Fund has been officially notified.
The Governments made this decision after a thorough and careful review of studies on the subject
and after considering the effects of several alternative exchange rates for the E.C. dollar on exports and
imports of the territories and on the future economic development of the region.
The E.C. dollar has enjoyed for some time a great deal of confidence which was being undermined
by sustained depreciation.
The decision to sever automatic link with the pound sterling and to link the E.C. dollar to the
United States dollar should stabilise the value of the E.C. dollar, reduce the rate of imported inflation
and further strengthen the confidence of our currency. This together with the realistic exchange rate
E.C.$2.70 per one U.S. dollar would help in providing the necessary climate for promotion of invest-
ment, increased employment and improvement in the general welfare of our peoples.
