RELEASE

It has been brought to the notice of the Ministry
of Finance that the owners of several estates have
been deducting and retaining contrary to the pro-
visions of the Provident Fund (Agricultural)
Workers) Act 1969 (No. 8 of 1969) the amount of
15 cents per day per worker for welfare from the
wages of daily paid workers employed by them.
The Ministry wishes to emphasise that employers
who fail to pay to the Accountant General at the
Treasury or at any District Revenue Office the
above-mentioned deductions made from the wages
of the workers in their employ are guilty of an
offence against the Act. The penalty for such an
offence is a fine, on summary conviction, not
exceeding two thousand, five hundred dollars
($2,500) or imprisonment for a term not exceeding
twelve months.
Arrangements have accordingly been made for
one officer each from the Treasury, the Ministry
of Labour and the Police Department to call upon
the defaulting estate owners for prompt collection
of the sums deducted from the wages of workers
employed by them.
