NOTICE

COMMONWEALTH CARIBBEAN REGIONAL
SECRETARIAT

VACANCY FOR SENIOR SECRETARY


APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably quali-
fied persons for appointment to the post of
Senior Secretary in the Commonwealth Caribbean
Regional Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana.

Duties :

The person appointed to this post will be required
to perform the following duties :-
(a) to supervise the day to day operations of the
Registry ;
(b) to supervise the day to day operations of the
Stenographers and Typists ;
(c) to organise and supervise all secretarial
arrangements for regional conferences and
meetings held at the Caribbean Regional
Secretariat ;
(d) such other duties as may be required from
time to time by the Secretary-General or
other duly authorised officer.

Qualifications :

(i) The General Certificate of Education at
Ordinary Level (or equivalent quali-
fication) with passes in at least five sub-
jects of which one must be ENGLISH
LANGUAGE.
(ii) A high sense of responsibility, good
judgment and initiative ;
(iii) A high degree of proficiency in shorthand
and typewriting.
(iv) Experience in serving Conferences plus
some administrative ability.

Salary :
Salary is on the scale $5,400 x $180 $6,120 per
annum. In addition to salary a house allowance
at the rate of $1,800 per annum will be paid when
the candidate reaches the point $5,760 per annum
in the scale. Starting point in the scale will be
according to merit and experience.

2. Information and Conditions applicable to the post

(i) It is proposed that in due course a scheme
of Superannuation benefits should be
initiated for Members of the staff of the
Secretariat. In the meantime it is pro-
posed that persons should be appointed
to the Secretariat on contract or on
secondment from Governments of Mem-
ber Territories. Serving officers should
apply through their respective Govern-
ments.
(ii) Appointments will be on probation for a
minimum period of one year, and con-
firmation in the appointment will be
subject to satisfactory work and conduct
during the probationary period.


(iii) Appointments will be subject to physical
fitness and to any rules, regulations, orders
or instructions which may from time to
time be instituted in respect of service
with the Commonwealth Caribbean
Regional Secretariat.
(iv) Secretariat staff will not be required to
pay income tax to the Government of
Guyana. They will, however, be required
to make payments month'y to a Staff
Assessment Scheme. This assessment
will be computed on the basis of gross
salary, excluding allowances.
(v) Other general conditions of appointment
such as leave have not yet been settled.
It is, however, proposed that such con-
ditions should, generally, be on similar
lines to those adopted by Governments
of Member Territories.
3. Applications should be accompanied by a
curriculum vitae and should give the names of two
persons to whom reference may be made, if
necessary, and should reach the Secretary-General,
Commonwealth Caribbean Regional Secretariat,
Third Floor, Bank of Guyana Building, George-
town, Guyana, not later than 15th August, 1969.

Grenada Agricultural Scholarship, 1969

APPLICATIONS are invited for the above
Scholarship tenable at the Faculty of Agri-
culture, University of the West InIdies, St.
Augustine, Trinidad, from October, 1969.
Applicants should satisfy the minimum entrance
requirements for admission to the University of
the West Indies and should, in addition, have
included in their qualifications: -
(i) Chemistry: A pass at Ordinary Level or
equivalent; and
(ii) Mathematics: A pass at Ordinary Level or
equivalent;
Passes at Ordinary Level in Physics and in
Biological subjects are also considered desirable
but are not essential.
Applications should reach the Chief Education
Officer by 23rd August, 1969, and should be
accompanied by:-
(a) Birth Certificate or certified copy thereof;
(b) Evidence of British Nationality;
(c) Testimonials from two persons other than
school teachers under whom education was
received;
(d) Testimonial from the Principal of last school
attended.
(e) A Medical Officer's Certificate showing that
the candidate is in a normal state of
health and fit to pursue University studies.
Candidates who expect to obtain entrance
requirements on the results of he 1969 G.C.E.
Examination may apply.
