CARIBBEAN METEOROLOGICAL
INSTITUTE

POST OF PRINCIPAL

Advance notice of vacancy and of two-year post-
graduate qualifying fellowship

(Re-Advertisement)

TI HE Caribbean Meteorological Institute has
Recently been established in Barbados under
the joint sponsorship of the Commonwealth
Caribbean Governments and the United Nations
to meet long outstanding requirements for meteor-
ological training, climatological information and
specialized advice, equipment maintenance, and
research with special reference to the Caribbean.
It will operate a wide range of equipment includ-
ing a 10-cm hurricane-tracking radar, a radio
facsimile faculty and a receiving unit for weather
satellite transmissions, a punch-card data process-
ing system, and an extensive scientific instrument-
ation. The 15-acre site donated by the Govern-
ment of Barbados provides scope for expansion
which is already taking place.
The senior staff, now headed by a United
Nations Project Manager and experts in aerology,
agricultural and hydrological meteorology, clima-
tology and electronic equipment are hoped to be
replaced by West Indian nationals within the next
two to three years; and it is expected that the
terms of service of the new posts will be decided
shortly. The possibility of their being equated to
academic appointments at the University of the
West Indies is currently under study.
Several post-graduate fellowships aimed at
enabling West Indian nationals to qualify for
these posts have been incorporated in the project;
and, as a result of previous advertisements, candi-
dates are already under consideration. However,
it has been decided to re-advertise a two-year
fellowship in advance studies in meterology,
through which it is hoped that a suitable candi-
date will qualify for the post of principal.
Candidates for this fellowship must be gradu-
ates in one of the physical sciences, preferably
meteorology or geophysics, should be at least 30
years of age on 1st July, 1969, and have had not
less than six years of progressive experience in a
position of responsibility in a scientific/educa-
tional organisation, service or institution. Experi-
ence in administration at international level will
be an advantage.
Note:-The precise field or fields of study will
be decided in the light of the candidate's
background.
Applications must be made on prescribed forms
which may be obtained from the Director-General,
Caribbean Meteorological Service, P.O. Box 461,
Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, by whom completed
applications (eight copies) must be received not
