COMMONWEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS 1964

APPL[CATIONS are invited for Commonwealth
Scholarships tenable in the United Kingdom
from October, 1964.
Most of these awards are fcr post-gaadua!e
courses and are available in many fields of study.
A few awards are a'so available at the under-
graduate level to students who wish to take
courses not available at the University of the West
Indies,
Application forms are available at the Education
Office and the completed forms accompanied by
the Candidate's plan of study, the certified record
of the university or other course he has taken,
and the references from each of the three -ersons
named in the relevant question on th'e application
form must reach the Education Officer on or
before 31st October, 1963.
It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure
that confidential letters from the referees named
in his application reach the Education Officer
(direct from the referee) by 31st October, 1963.

S a preliminary to preparing Contract Docu-
A. ments for the proposed Improvement to the
Western portion of Pearls Airport, Grenada, all
interested contractors are hereby requested to send
in their names an4. addresses to The Director of
Public Works, St. George's, Grenada, by noon of
Monday, 30th September, 1963.
Each such interested contractor will make a
bona fide deposit of $100 to the Government of
Grenada and forward also under confidential cover
to The Director of Public Works any particulars of
plant and machinery readily available to him as
well as hbank pr other supporting guarantee.

THE following Notice issued by authority of H.M.
Customs and Excise, London, is published for
general information :
IMPORTANT WARNING. Postal Packages
sent to Britain.
If you are posting a package (e.g. a gift parcel)
to Britain you should make quite sure that all the
contents are declared and are correctly described
on the Customs declaration form. If this is not
done the whole package may be confiscated by the
British Customs, thus causing disappointment and
loss for the person who was to receive it.
Rum and other spirits from over 1800 packages
sent from the West Indies and British Guiana were
confiscated in 1962 by the British Customs. This
was done because the contents had not been
properly declared.

The index was revised in June, 1957, and is shown herounder as a new series.

COST OF LIVING FIGURES FOR THE MONTH OF JULY, 1963


The revised cost of living figures for all items for the month of July, 1963 is 121.93, a rise
of 21.93 points above the base figure for June, 1957, taken as 100.
The following table shows the cost of living index figure at the end of each mouth up to June,
1957 as compared with the base year August, 1939 taken as 100; as well as the figures in the series
with the base figure at June, 1957, taken as 100:-

PRINCIPAL CHANGES DURING JULY, 1963

Food: There were increases in the retail prices of fresh beef and pork which resulted in an
increase 3f 0.6 point above the figure for June, 1963. The group index figure now stands at 122.
Clothing : Due to increases in the retail price of men's shoes, felt hats, women's vests and plain
cotton, which outweighed decreases in ladies' shoes and brassieres there was an increase of 3.7 points
above the figure for June, 1963. The group index figure is now 129.7.
Fuel and Cleaning : There were no changes in the retail prices of the items in this group during
the month. Like June, 1963, the group index figure of 122.2 remained unchanged.
Drink and Tobacco: The average level of prices of the items in this group showed no
change during the period under review. The group index figure therefore remained at 112.6.
Miscellaneous Goods: There were decreases in the retail price of teacup and saucers and
ware plates which resulted in a decrease of 4.3.points below the figure for June, 1963. The group
index figure therefore fell to 119.
