ADVERTISEMENT

APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably qual-
ified persons to to fill two posts of Produce
Inspectors in the Department of Agriculture,
Grenada, which will soon become vacant.
2. The posts are pensionable and carry salary in
the scale $3,444 x 144-$3,876. Transport allow-
ance at the rate of $1,284 per annum will be payable
in respect of the maintenance of motor cars which
are essential for the efficient performance of the
duties of the posts.
3. Successful applicants will be expected to work
in the Marketing Division of the Department and
carry out regulatory duties in connection with the
inspection of all shipments of export crops leaving
Grenada for Overseas Markets. It will be their
duty to inspect all private and co-operatively owned
premises in which such agricultural products are
handled, processed, dried, graded and/or fumigated
prior to export. Their duties will include the
conducting of short field surveys from time to time
of all locally grown foodcrops, in order to assist in
their distribution and marketing. It will also be
the duty of the Produce Inspectors to advise
farmers on the harvesting of all field crops.
4. Young men with many years practical farming
experience and with knowledge of local farming
conditions will be considered eligible for appoint-
ment. Preference will be given to applicants with
experience in performing regulatory duties as in
paragraph 3 above.
5. Applications giving particulars of age, educa-
tion and experience, which should be accompanied
by two testimonials, should reach the Secretary of
the Public Service Commission, Administrator's
Office, Grenada, not later than the 15th August,
1962.

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Cocoa Industry Improvement Scheme


Distribution of Rooted Cuttings of Selected Strains
of Grenada Cocoa for Planting in 1963


JERSONS desirous of obtaining Planting M material
from the Cocoa Stations for planting in 1963,
should apply on the forms provided for that
purpose, entitled : Application Form for Plants
Propagated for Distribution by the Department of
Agriculture."
2) ApDlication forms should be forwarded in
Duplicate to the Cocoa Agronomist, Mt. Horne
Cocoa Station, St. Andrew's, to reach him not
later than 31st August, 1962.
(O) Applications received after the 81st August
1962, will neither be acknowledged nor considered.
(4) Application forms are available at the
Department of Agriculture, all Agricultural and
Cocoa Stations, and District Revenue Offices.
Application forms can also be obtained from all
members of the extension staff of the Department
of Agriculture.
(5) Rotted Cocoa Cuttings are delivered at a
cost of 5c. per plant to the applicant at a point, as
near as possible to the site at which they are.to be
planted, and accessible at the time to the motor
vehicle conveying the plants.
(6) The conditions under which Planting Mate-
rial will be issued are as follows:-
(i) The area selected by an applicant will be
inspected by an authorised officer, as soon
as possible after the receipt of the applica-
tion, for the purpose of determining the
suitability of the site in regards to altitude,
soil typa, wind protection and other ecologi-
cal and environmental conditions. The
applicant will then be notified whether or
not the area is approved for planting.
(ii) If for stated reasons the area is declared to
be unsuitable for planting cocoa clones, no
allocation of plants will be made to the
applicant.
(iii) If the area is declared suitable, an author-
ised officer will inform the applicant what
minimum action is required of him by the
Department of Agriculture, in regard to
provision of ground shade, windbreakls, soil
conservation measures, soil preparation etc.
The Agricultural Department will render all
assistance, guidance and advice in this
connection.
(iv; The minimum area for which plants will be
issued will be that which will contain fifty
(50) rooted cuttings planted at a spacing of
12ft. x 12ft. in a block.
The area to be planted will be re-ins-ected
by an authorised officer immediately before
the proposed date of delivery of the plants,
for the purpose of ascertaining whether all
conditions have been satisfactorily fulfilled,
and whether the area is in a suitable state
of preparation for planting.

(v) Authorised officers of the Department of
Agiculture will make periodic inspections
of the replanted areas, as often as may be
considered necessary, for the purpose of
observing field conditions, the development
of the young plants and advising the grower
on the care and management of the young
plants.
(vi) Applicants are advised to take advantage of
the experience already gained in replanting
methods at the Cocoa Stations and other
plots, where replanting with rooted cocoa
cuttings have already been undertaken.
Applicants are accordingly invited to visit
the Cocoa Stations and to make the fullest
possible use of all information that is
available.

EDUCATION NOTICE

THE G.E.C. Examination will be held in January
1963, and thereafter in January of each year
instead of in June.
The initial entry fee to the University is one
pound ($4.80). In addition to this entry fee, the
entrance fee for each subject at Ordinary Level is
ten shiilihgs ($2.40) and for a subject at Advanced
Level, twenty-five shillings ($6.00) local fee of
$4.80 is charged for each entry.
Entries fcr the January 1963 Examinatian will
close on 81st August, and no entry will be accepted
after that date.

BY Order made the 10th day of July, 1961, there
will be offered for sale at this office, on Friday
the 17th day of August, 1962, at 12 o'clock noon
all the right title and interest of the defendant to
and in a leasehold lot of land known as Glebe
Crown Lands situate at Paddock in the parish of
Saint George in the island of Grenada containing
by admeasurement One rood and twenty-seven
Poles or 18,240 square feet bounded as the same
is delineated and described in a plan marked "X"
annexed to an indenture of Lease dated the 25th
of June, 1960, made between James Montieth Lloyd
Administrator of Grenada of the One part and the
defendant of the Other parb and recorded in the
Deeds and Land Registry of Grenada in Liber 10
at page 383 together with the buildings thereon.
The said interest is sold subject to a mortgage
dated the 7th day of July, 1960, and made between
the defendant of the One part and the Grenada
Co-operative Bank Limited of the Other part and
recorded in Liber D 10 at page 637 whereunder
there is now due the principal sum of $48,200.00
with interest thereon at $7.00 per centum per
annum from the 30th day of June, 1961, and free
from all judgments against the defendant so far as
they are known.
The sale is subject to the usual conditions, a
copy of which may he seen at this office and to the
REDUCED RESERVED PRICE of $82,647.26.

The index was revised in June, 1957, and is shown hereunder as a new series.

COST OF LIVING FIGURES FOR THE MONTH OF MAY, 1962



The revised cost of living figure for all items for the month of May, 1962 is 116.07 a rise
of 16.07 points over the base figure for June, 1957, taken as 100.
The following table shows the cost-of-living index figure at the end of each month up to June,
1957 as compared with the base year August, 1939 taken as 100; as well as the figures in the new
series with the base figure at June, 1957, taken as 100 :-

PRINCIPAL CHANGES DURING MONTH
Food : There was a decrease in the retail price of fresh beef which resulted in a decrease of .05
points below the figure for April, 1962. The group index figure at the end of the month fell to 113.65.
Clothing: There were no changes in the retail prices of the items in this group. The group
index figure remained unchanged at 108.
Fuel and Cleaning : There were no changes in the retail prices of the items in this group. Like
April, 1962, the group index figure remained unchanged at 119.5.
Drink and Tobacco: There were no changes in the retail prices of the items in this group
during the period under review. The April, 1962 figure of 106.8 therefore remained unchanged.
Miscellaneous Goods: During the period under review, the average level of prices of the
items in this group remained unchanged. The group index figure remained unchanged at 120.8.
