NOTICE

Scholarship in Electronic Technology at the
Philips International Institute of Technological
Studies-1962/63

HE Federal Government of the West Indies
Shas accepted an offer by the Management of
the Philips Works, Eindhoven, Holland of the
above mentioned scholarship which will he tenable
for a study term of one year mainly in subjects
under the general heading of Electronics and will
include such subjects as radio, television, telecom-
munications, measurement and control equipment
and their industrial applications. However, other
subjects such as light and lighting, X-rays, electron
microscopy, welding materials and techniques, and
some branches of applied chemistry will also ne
possibilities.
The study will, as much as possible, be supported
by all facilities that can be provided by a close


collab-ration with the Philips laboratories and
factories and will include:
(a) private theoretical and experimental studies
in the Institute.
(b) attendance to lectures given in. the Instittue.
(c) a work period in one or more of the research
or factory laboratories.
Candidates should not be more then 35 years
old and should possess a degree equivalent to the
M.A. (U.S.A.) or the B.fc. (U.K.) and must have
in addition some practical experience. They must
also be in good health and will be required to
undergo a medical examination.
The value of the Scholarship includes:
(a) tuition fees at the Institute.
(b) return passage, tourist class by plane to
Eindhoven, Holland.
(c) living allowance at the rate of 325 Dutch
guilders (_32 approx. each month).
Applications are invited for this scholarship
which must be made in triplicate on the prescribed
forms obtainable from the Administrator's Office,
St. George's, Grenada, and completed application
forms and supporting documents must be submitted
to reach the Secretary to Government, Adminis-
trator's Office, not later than the 15th November,
1961.

OTICE is hereby given that a Session of the
L Supreme Court of the Windward Islands and
Leeward Islands at Grenada, in its Criminal
Jurisdiction, will be held at the Court House in the
town of St. George on Tuesday the 10th day of
October, 1963, at 9.30 o'clock in the forenoon when
all concerned and bound over to prosecute or to
give evidence or summoned as Jurors or witnesses
are required to give their personal attendance, and
all officers who have taken Inquisitions, Depositions,
Examinations, Recognizances or other papers
cognizable by the Court are required to return the
same without delay to this office.

British Caribbean Rhodes Scholarship-1962



1. Applications are invited mrr The iritish Carib-
bean Rhodes Scholarship, 1962.
2. The scholarship has been instituted by the
Trustees to be awarded to a candidate from the
British Caribbean (excluding Jamaica). The closing
date for receiving applications is 31st October, 1961.
3. The scholarship is tenable at Oxford Univer-
sity for two years, but may be extended for a third
year.
4. The value of a Rhodes Scholarship is 750 a
year (3,600 B.W.I. dollars).
5. The following are the conditions for entiy :
(a) He must be a male British subject and
unmarried. A Rhodes Scholarship is f)r-
feited by marriage after election, or during
a scholar's first or second year of residence.
Permi-s.on to marry without depivation of
his scholarship may be given by the Rhodes
Trustees for a scholar's third year.
(b) He must be a British subject who was him-
self born in any of the following territories :
Bahamn. Islands, Barbados, British Guiana,
British Honduras, Leeward Islands, Trini-
dad and Tobago, Windward Islands, British
Virgin Islands; or of whose parents (or
guardians) either one has been domiciled
and resident in one or more of those terri-
tories for at least five years immediately


preceding 1st January in the year of his
candidature, or, in the event of both being
dead, one las been domiciled and resident in
one of those territories for at least five years
immediately prior to his or her death.
(c) He must have been educated in one or more
of the above territories for at least five years
between the ages of nine and twenty.
(d) He must have passed his nineteenth but not
have passed his twenty-fifth birthday by
October 1, 1962.
(e) Unless he already has a degree from a recog-
nised University (the U.C.W.I. or the
London external degrees are recognized for
the purpose), he must have completed at
leaqt two years' study by October, 1962, at
a Univer-ity approved by the University of
Oxford, and thus satisfy the Oxford admis-
sion requirements.
6. In making appointments the Committee will
have regard to the qualities specified by Mr. Rhodes
in that section of his Will in which he defined the
general type of scholar he desired: literary and
scholastic attainments; qualities of manhood,
truthfulness, courage, devotion to duty. Sympathy
for and protection of the weak, kindness, unselfish-
ness, and fellowship; exhibition of moral force of
character and of instincts to lead and to take an
interest in his fellows: physical vigour, as shown
by fondness for or success in manly outdoor activi-
ties.
