DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Cocoa Industry Improvement Scheme

Distribution of Rooted Cuttings of Selected Strains
of Grenada Cocoa for Planting in 1962

A charge of five cents (5c.) will be made
for each Cocoa Plant payable in advance

PERSONS desirous of obtaining rooted cocoa
cuttings from the Cocoa Stations for planting
in 1962, should apply on the forms provided for
that purpose, entitled: Application Form for
Rooted Cocoa Cuttings Propagated for Distribution
by the Cocoa Industry Improvement Scheme of
Grenada."
2. Application forms should be fowarded in
dnplicate to the Cocoa Agronomist, Alt. Home
Cocoa Station, St. Andrew's on or before the 31st
August, 1961. Applications received after the
81st August will neither b3 acknowledged nor con-
sidered.
3. Application forms are available at the De-
partment of Agriculture, all Agricultural and Cocoa
Stations, District Revenue Offices, and from mem-
bers of the Extension Staff of the Department of
Agriculture.

4. Rooted Cocoa Cuttings will be transported
free of cost to the applicant at a point as near as
possible to the site at which they are to be planted,
and accessible at the time to the motor vehicle
conveying the plants. Applicants who possess
means of transport may be required to use them.
5. The conditions under which rooted cocoa
cuttings will be issued are as follows :-
(i) The area selected by an applicant will be in-
spected by an authorised officer, as soon as
possible after the receipt of the application,
for the purpose ot determining the suita-
bility of the site in regard to altitude, soil
type, wind protection and other ecological
and en-iromental conditions. The appli-
cant will then be notified whether or not
the area is approved for planting.
(ii) if for stated reasons the area is declared to
be unsuitable for planting cocoa clones, no
allocation of plants will be made to the
applicant.
(iii) if the area is declared suitable, an authorised
Officer will inform the applicant what mini-
mum action is required of him by the De-
partment of Agriculture in regard to pro-
vision of ground shade, windbreaks, soil
conservation measures, soil preparation etc.
The Agricultural Department will render
all assistance, guidance and advice in this
connection.
(iv) The minimum area for which plants will be
issued will be that which will contain fifty
(50) rooted cuttings planted at a spacing of
12'x12" in a block. The area to be planted
will be re-inspected by an authorised officer
immediately before the proposed date of
delivery of the plaits, for the purpose of ascer-
tainng whether all conditions have been
satisfactorily fulfilled, and whether the area
is in a suitable state of preparation for
planting.
(v) Authorised officers of the Department of
Agriculture will make periodic inspections
of the replanted areas, as often as may be
considered necessary, for the purpose of
observing field conditions, the development
of the young plants and advising the grower
on the care and management of the young
plants.
(vi) Applicants are advised to take advantage of
the experience already gained in replanting
methods at the Cocoa Stations and other
plots, where replanting with rooted cocoa
cuttings have already been undertaken.


Applicants are accordingly invited to visit'the
Cocoa Stations and to make the fullest
possible use of all information that is
available.

Junior Laboratory Techniciar at the Govern-
ment Bacteriological Laboratory, Colony Hospital,

Pioneer Industries Ordinance, 1952 (No. 19 of 1952) that the Administrator in Council proposes making
the order set out hereunder. Any person who objects to the making of the said order should give notice

ORDER, 1961.

2. Declaration of Pioneer Industry. The manufacture of men's, women's and children's
garments, household linen and automobile seat covers is hereby declared to be a pioneer industry for the
purpose of the Aid to Pioneer ludustries Ordinance, 1952; and such manufactured products are hereby
declared to be pioneer products for the said purposes.

The index was revised in June, 1957, and is shown hereunder as a new series.

COST OF LIVING INDEX FOR THE MONTH OF MAY, 1961


The Revised coit-of-living index figure for all items for the month of May, 1961, is 113.46
a rise of 13.46 points over the base figure for June, 1957, taken as 100.
The following table shows the cost-of-living index figures at the end of each month up to June
1957, as compared with the base:year August, 1939, taken as 100 ; as well as the figures in the nev
series with the base figure at June, 1957, taken as 100:-

PRINCIPAL CHANGES DURING MONTH
Food : Due to increases in the retail prices of bluggoes and bananas (fruits) the index under this
group rose by 2.1 points above the figure for April, 1961. The index figure at the end of the period was
therefore 110.9.
Fuel and Cleaning : There was no change in the prices of the items in this group during the
period. Like April, 1961, the index figure remained at 117.03.
Clothing : There were increases in the retail prices of men's felt hats, women's vests, plain
cotton and silk dress material which resulted in an increase of 2 points above the figure for April, 1961.
The group index figure now stands 130.9.
Drink and Tobacco: There was no change in the prices of the items in this group during the
month. Like April, 1961 the index figure of 93.08 remained unchanged.
Miscellaneous Goods: There was an increase in the retail price of men's half soles (leather)
which resulted in an increase of 19 points above the figure for April, 1961. The group index figures
is now 124.3.
