ANNOUNCEMENT

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Cocoa Industry Improvement Scheme

Distribution of Rooted Cuttings of Selected Strains
of Grenada Cocoa for Planting in 1962

A charge of five cents (5c.) will be made
for each Cocoa Plant payable in advance

ERSONS desirous of obtaining rooted cocoa
cuttings from the Cocoa Stations for planting
in 1962, should apply on the forms provided for
that purpose, entitled: Application Form for
Rooted Cocoa Cuttings Propagated for Distribution
by the Cocoa Industry Improvement Scheme oi
Grenada."
2. Application forms should be fowarded in
dupli-ate to the Cocoa Agronomist, Mt. Home
Cocoa Station, St. Andrew's on or before the 31st
August, 1961. Applications received after the
31st August will neither be acknowledged nor con-
sidered.
3. Application forms are available at the De-
partment of Agriculture, all Agricultural and Cocoa
Stations, District Revenue Offices, and from mem-
bers of the Extension Staff of the Department of
Agriculture.
4. Rooted Cocoa Cuttings will be transported
free of cost to the applicant at a point as near as
possible to the site at which they are to he planted,
and accessible at the time to the motor vehicle
conveying the plants. Applicants who possess
means of transport may be required to use them.


9. The conditions under which rooted cocoa
catings will be issued are as follows :
(i) Tho area selected by an applicant will be in-
spected by an authorised officer, as soon as
possible after the receipt of the application,
for the purpose of determining the suita-
bility of the site in regard to altitude, soil
type, wind protection and other ecological
and environmental conditions. The appli-
cant will then be notified whether or not
the area is approved for planting.
(ii) if for stated reasons the area is declared to
be unsuitable for planting cocoa clones, no
allocation of plants will be made to the
applicant.
(iii) if the area is declared suitable, an authorised
Officer will inform the applicant what mini-
mum action is required of him by the De-
partment of Agriculture in regard to pro-
vision of ground shade, windbreaks, soil
conservation measures, soil preparation etc.
The Agricultural Department will render
all assistance, guidance and advice in this
connection.
(iv) The minimum area for which plants will be
issued will be that which will contain fifty
(60) rooted cuttings pla;tted at a spyaing of
12'x12" in a block. The area to be planted
will be re-inspected by an authorised officer
immediately before the proposed date of
delivery of the plants, for the purpose of ascer-
taining whether all conditions have been
satisfactorily fulfilled, and whether the area
is in a suitable state of preparation for
planting.
(v) Authorised officers of the Department of
Agriculture will make periodic inspections
of the replanted areas, as often as may be
considered necessary, for the purpose of
observing field conditions, the development
of the young plants and advising the grower
on the care and management of the young
plants.
(vi) Applicants are advised to take advantage of
the experience already gained in replanting
methods at the 'ocoa Stations and other
plots, where replanting with rooted cocoa
cuttings have already been undertaken.
Applicants are accordingly invited to visit the
Cocoa Scations and to make the fullest
possible use of all information that is
available.

Fellowship Plan

T HE Government of the Federation of Malaya
are offering two-year scholarships in 1962 for
Commonwealth students to pursue post-graduate

studies or to undertake research in Malaya.
Applicants must be citizens of a Commonwealth
country and normally resident in any part of the
Commonwealth other than Malaya. The scholir-
ships are open to both men and women who will
iot have reached their 35th birthday by 1st
January, 1962, and who are, or by the end of 1961
Will be gradua-tes of a university or college, or
holders of an equivalent qualification.
The scholarship includes:
(a) transportation to Malaya and return,
normally by tourist airi passage, as
arranged by the Malayan Committee;
(b) approved tuition, laboratory and examina-
tion fees;
(c) a personal maintenance allowance, payable
monthly, at the rate of M$5,400/- per
annum (630 sterling);
(d) a grant for books or equipment of M$150/-
per annum ;
(e) a grant of up to M$ 100/- per annum for
approved travel within Malaya;
(f) an additional marriage allowance at the
rate of MV$1,200/- per annum for a male
married scholar accompanied by his wife,
plus the cost of the wife's fare to M'laya
and return. This allowance will not be
payable during the first year of the tenure
of the scholarship unless the scholar was
married at the time of his application for
an award, and will not be payable if the
wife herself holds a scholarship or is in
paid employment while in Malaya.
Applications on the prescribed form which are
obtainable at the Administrator's Office should be
addressed to the Secretary to Government to leacu
him not later than 31st July, 1961.

THE Secretary of State for the Colonies has, on
the nomination of the Administrators of
Antigua, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla and Montserrat,
appointed the Financial Secretary of St. Kitts-
Nevis-Anguilla to be a Commissioner representing
those Territories, comprising the Leeward Islands,
on the Board of Commissioners of Currency,
British Caribbean Territories (Eastern Group).
The Secretary of Slate for the Colonies, on the
nomination of the Administrators of the Territories
named above, has also appointed the Financial
Secretary of Antigua to act as a Commissioner
during the absence from the Territory of St. Kitts-
Nevis- Anguilla of Mr. Hayley, the Financial Secre-
tary of that Territory. This appointment takes
effect from 1st June, 1961.
