of 1951). The Administrator hereby gives notice
that on the twenty-fifth day of August, One thous-
and nine hundred and sixty he issued a Writ of
Bye-Election for the seat of the Elected Member
for the Electoral District of the Parishes of Saint
John and St. Mark and the place and day fixed
for the Nomination of Candidates is the Magis-
trate's Court, Goayave in the parish of Saint John
between the hours of 9 o'clock in the forenoon and
12 o'clock noon of the twelfth day of September,

the following Ordinance of the Grenada Legisla-
ture :-

expenditure of certain sums of money paid
from the General Revenue for the service of
the Colony for the period from the first day
of January to the thirty-first day of
December, one thousand nine hundred and
fifty-eight in addition to the sums already
sanctioned under the Appropriation Ordin-
ance. 1958.

DISTRICT BOARD

GENERAL ELECTION

T AKE notice that I will attend at the District
S Board Office, Grenville on Monday, 5th
September, 1960, between 9 a.m. and 12 noon for
the purpose of receiving nominations for the return
of (7) seven persons to serve as Members of the
St. Andrew's District Board for the triennial period
commencing 1st October, 1960.
Every candidate for Election shall be an elector
and be nominated in writing by a duly qualified
elector seconded by another. In the event of a
contest, polls will be opened at the District Board
premises (temporary Court Hous3) and the Court
House Grenville, from 7 al.m.-11.30 a.m. and 1.00
p.m.-4.00 p.m. on Thursday, 15th September, 1960,
during which time ballot papers will be issued to
every registered voter applying for same.

ANNOUNCER / OPERATOR

PPLICANTS are invited to fill the vacancy
existing for an Announcei/Operator, Wind-
ward Islands Broadcasting Service, Grenada.
Candidates should posses the minimum qualifi-
cation for entry into the Civil Service. A sound
knowledge of music and of current affairs is
essential.
The person engaged will be required to carry cut
Announcer's duties and to control programme
outputs from the Studios. The person will be
expected to think quickly, ind deal effectively with
any emergencies that may oriso, anrl to develop
some aptitude for programme compilation under
the supervision of the l'rogrammo Director or his
Assistants.
The salary of the office is in the scale $2,016 x
$57.60-$2,304 per annum. There is possibility,
but no guarantee, that the salary may be revised
shortly.

PROGRAMME ASSISTANT-GRENADA

APPLICATIONS are invited to fill the vacancy
. existing in the post of Programme Assistant,
Grenada, W\indward Islands Broadcasting Service,
Grenada.
Candidates should possess the minimum qualifi-
cation for entry into the Civil Service, or
experience in modern broadcasting technique.
he person engaged will be required to assist
the Programme Director in the preparation of
programmes and to produce programmes, and to
undertake the preparation and production of pro-
grammes in the absence of the Programme
Director. The person shall be required to cover
outside broadcast on sporting events and to per-
form such duties as the Manager and Programme
Director may from time to time direct.
The salary of the office is in the scale
$3,110.40 x $115.20-$3,456 per annum and suit-
ably qualified persons may be appointed at the
maximum of the scale. There is a possibility,
but no guarantee, that the salary may be revised
shortly.

PROGRAMME/OPERATOR-W.I.B.S.

APPLICATIONS are invited to fill the vacancies
existing in three posts as Programme/Opera-
tor, Windward Islands Broadcasting Service,
Grenada.
Candidates should possess the Cambridge School
Certificate. Experience in raii,) is not a necessary
qualification, but previous interest in radio or
electronics as a hobby, and a keen ear for music
will be considered desirable attributes.
Succ ssful candidates will be trained in the
operation of receiving equipment, recording equip-
ment and broadcast studio equipment. Upon com-
pletion of training after two years' experience,
Broadcast Opraitrs will be eligible, when suitable
vacancies exist, for promotion to either Engineering
or Programme Department-, depending upon the
individual aptitude of the Operator and subject to
his having passed any proficiency bar examinations
which might apply.
There will be a probationary period of three
months.
The person engaged will be required to work
under the direction and supervision of the Chief
Engineer and to perform such duties as may be
assigned to him from time to time.
The sal ry will be in the scale $8"4.00 x $72.00
-$1,296 per annum. There is a possibility, but no
guarantee, that the salary may he revised shortly.

Vacancy for Superintendent Marine Engineer,
Government of Trinidad and Tobago

Superintendent Marine Engineer in the

NOTICE

Post of Superintendent of Public Works
St. Vincent, The West Indies

APPLICATIONS are invited for appointment to
the vacant post of Superintendent of Public
Works, St. Vincent.
Appointment: The post is pensionable, but
appointment may be made on a contract basis
(non-pensionable) for a period of 3 years in the
first instance. The Officer will be subject to
Colonial Regulations, and local General Orders and
Financial and Store Rules for the time being in
force in so far as they are applicable.
Salary : The salary of the post is in the scale
$5,184x144-$6,336 per annum, and appointment
may be made at any point in this scale depending
on the candidate's experience and qualifications.
It is expected that the salary of the post will be
increased.
Allowances : A travelling allowance is payable
in accordance with local regulations.
Quarters: Quarters are not provided, but in
the event that Government quarters become avail-
able, the officer will be required to pay rental not
exceeding 10% of his salary, or 5% of the assessed

Vacancy in the Post of Principal, Charles-
town Secondary School, Nevis, in the
Territory of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla



APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably quali-
fied persons for appointment to the post of
Principal, Charlestown Secondary School, Nevis.
2. The school is a Government institution with
an academic fee-paying section which provides
tuition up to the standard of Cambridge School
Certificate, and a Senior non fee-paying section
which provides farther tuition in Primary School
subjects and training in practical subjects e.g.
domestic science, agricultural science, needlework,
woodwork. The School is a mixed one with a roll
of approximately 225 pupils.
3. The post is pensionable and carries a salary
of $4,320 per annum. The officer appointed there-
to will be subject to Regulations of Her Majesty's
Colonial Service and to the Laws, General Orders
and Statutory Rules and Orders inforcs in the
Colony from time to time.
4. Preference will be given to applicants posses-
sing a degree of a University' within the British
Commonwealth, but applicants holding Inter-Arts
qualification or its equivalent, a Teachef's Diploma
and with more than seven years experience in the
administration of Senior Modern Secondary
Schools, will be considered.
5. Experience in handicraft, domestic science,
music or other approved extra-curricular activity
will be regarded as an asset.
6. Free passages will be provided for the officer
and also for his wife and not more than three
children under the age of eighteen years who are
unmarried and are dependant upon him, provided
that they accompany him or join him in the
territory within twelve months of his appointment.
7. Vacation leave may be granted at the rate of
48 days per annum. Leave passages may be

GOVERNMENT NOTICE


Post of Administrative Assistant, Barbados

PPLICATIONS are invited for appointment to
any vacancies that may occur in respect of
the above mentioned post.
Qualifications: Candidates should preferably
be between the ages of 21 and 28 years at the date
of application and should posess a recognized Uni-
versity Degree, preferably with honours,
Duties : The successful candidate will be re-
quired to assist in the performance of duties of an
administrative nature and will be liable to transfer
between the Ministries and Secretariat in order to
gain experience.
Appointment and Salary : Appointment will
be subject to medical fitness and a probationary
period of two years. The post is pensionable with
salary in the scale $3,528x$144-$4,392 plus a
temporary Cost of Living Allowance of $108 per
annum. Commencing salary will be determined in
the light of the successful candidate's qualifications
and experience. Salary is subject to deduction of
4% per annum under the Widows and Orphans'
Pension Scheme, in the case of male officers.
Passages : The successful candidate will be
eligible for the cost of passages for himself and
family from the place of recruitment up to a limit
of $1,920.
Leave and Leave Passages: Vacation leave
is granted at the rate of 45 days a year, accumulative
up to 180 days. In addition casual leave and sick
leave are granted in accordance with the Barbados
Leave Regulations, 1952. On completion of a tour
of service of three and a half years the officer is
eligible for leave passages for himself and, if married
for his wife. A pro rata passage allowance is payable
on completion of not less than two years of tour.

Appointment and Salary: Appointment may
either be on permanent and pensionable basis or on
agreement terms for a period of three years. Salary
is in the scale $5,760x240-6,240 (Q.B.) 6,720x480-
7,200 per annum, plus a temporary non-pensionable
cost of living allowance of $108 per annum. The
point of entry in the scale of the successful
applicant will be determined in the light of
qualifications and experience. Salary of pension-
able officer is subject to deduction of 4% per annun
under the Widows, and Orphans, Pensions Act.
Contract officer is eligible for gratuity of 20% of
basic salary on the satisfactory completion of
agreement. Appointment is subject to medical
fitness, and in the case of pensionable officer, two
years probation.
2. The successful applicant will be eligible for
travelling allowance at approved Government rates

Qualifications : Associate Member of the Town
Planning Institute. Additional qualifications as an
architect, surveyor, engineer, or an university degree
will be an advantage. The succ.saful candidate
must be approved by the Town and Planning Insti-
tute for appointment to the Institute's index of
planning officers willing to accept pupil assistance.
Duties : The officer shall work under the general
direction of the Town and Country Planning Officer
and act as deputy head of the Town and Country
Development Planning Office. He shall assist the
Town and Country Planning Officer in the prepara-
tion and administration of comprehensive plans for
the physical development of Barbados.

St. Lucia, The West Indies



APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably quali-
fied Medical Officers for appointment to the
post of Resident Surgeon, Victoria Hospital, St.
Lucia, The West Indies, which shall become
vacant on 1st March, 1961.
1. Appointment: The post is p3nsionable and
is subject to two years' probation in t he first
instance, but, if desired, the appointment m.Ly be on
a contractual basis for a period of three years in
the first instance. It will be subject to Colonial
Regulations and to local General Orders in force
for the time being in so far as they are applicable.
2. Salary : The salary of the post is $6,624
(1,380) per annum.
3. Fees and Allowances: An allowance at
the rate of $480 (100) per annum is payable for
X-ray diagnostic work, if this is undertaken by the
Surgeon. The Surgeon receives 75% of operation
fees (average last three years $2,880 (600 per
annum) and 25% of the hospital dues payable by
surgical patients (average last three years $1,104
(230 per annum).
4. Quarters: Unfurnished Government quarters
will be provided at a rental cf 10% of salary or 5%
of the capital value, whichever is the less, subject
to a maximum rental of $720 (150) per annum.
5. Leave and Leave Passages: Vacation
leave on full p:y will be granted at the rate of 4.5
days for each period of 12 consecutive months
resident service. Leave passages will be provided
in accordance with local regulations.
6. Duties : The office will ba required to
undertake general surgery and obstetrical work at
the Victoria Hospital under the general direction

The revised Cost-of-Fivinri In-ex for all items for the month of July, 1960, is 106.64, a rise of
6.64 points over the base figure for June, 1957, taken as 100.
The following table shows the Cost-of-Living Index Figures at the end of each month up to June,
1957, as compared with the base year August, 1939, taken as 100 ; as well as the figures in the nef

Food : There were increases in the retail prices of cooking cil and snout which outweighed a
decrease in salt beef and resulted in an increase of 0.2 point above the figure for June, 1960. The
group index figure now stands at 1C6.7.
Clothing: During the period unrler review there were increases in the retail prices of men's
leather shoes, panties, brassieres, denim, zephyr, cotton dress material and silk dress material which
outweighed a decrease in white drill and resulted in an increase of 4.5 points above the figure for June,
1960. The group index figure is now 116.2.
Fuel and Cleaning : There were no changes in the retail prices of the items under this group
during the period. Like June, 1960 the group index figure remained unchange-1 at 103.7.
Drink and Tobacco: There were no changes in the retail prices of the items in this group.
The group index figure, therefore, remained unchanged at 89. L.
Miscellaneous goods: There were no changes in the retail prices of the items in this group.
Like June, 1960, the group index figure of 116.1 remained unchanged.
