NOTICE.

APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably
qualified candidates for appointment to the
post of Assistant Secretary (Administrative)
Winaward Islands, particulars of which are as
follows :
1. Appointment. The post is on the per-
manent and pensionable establishment and the
appointment carries with it liability to transfer to
any post of equivalent status in the Windward
Islands.
2. Salary. The salary of the post is at the
rate of $2,880 p.a. (in the scale $2,880x120-
$4,08C) plus a pensionable pay addition of 20 per
cent of salary.
3. Quarters. Quarters are not provided, but
in the event of Government quarters being avail-
able they may be rented at rental not exceeding
10% of salary or 5% of assessed value, whichever
is less.
4. Leave. The officer will be eligible for
vacation leave at the rate of 45 days for each
completed period of 12 months' resident service,
accumulating up to a maximum of 180 days.
5. Duties. The duties of the post will include:
(a) Division of files between the various
branches of the office.
(b) Initiation of action on files, other than those
for the financial branch, and preparation of
draft replies, despatches etc. etc.
(c) Supervision over the telegrams Clerk and
general responsibility for the receipt and
despatch of telegrams, including decode of
those received after office hours.
(d) Responsibility for secret and higher grade
files and all cypher material etc.
(e) Supervision of the Departmental Votes
Accounts, maintenance of the General
Order book and certifying of all claims.
(f) Supervision of matters affecting leave,
attendance and discipline.
(g) General assistance and advice to the Chief
Secretary.
(h) Any other duties wnich may from time to
time be assigned to him by the Chief
Secretary.
6. General Information. The officer will be
subject to the Colonial Regulations, the Wind-
ward Islands Financial & Store Rules, the local
General Orders and Subsidiary legislation in force
from time to time. Government officials are
liable to taxation imposed by local enactments.


Applications containing full particulars including
qualifications and experience of applicant, should
be forwarded to the Chief Secretary, Windward
Islands, Grenada, to reach him not later than
28th February, 1958.

Medical and Dentists' Registration
Ordinance, (Cap. 137).

TAKE notice that a Select Committee of the
Legislative Council has been appointed by
the said Council;-
(a) to examine in detail a Bill for an Ordinance
to amend the Medical and Dentists'
Registration Ordinance (Cap. 137), and to
report thereon, and
(b) to take evidence from all interested parties.
All persons interested are hereby requested to
give notice of their intention to give evidence
verbally or may submit memoranda to the Sec-
retary, R. A. Daniel, Clerk of the Legislative
Council, York House, St. George's within two
weeks from the date hereof.

Notice to Importers & Exporters.

THE attention of Importers and Exporters is
Drawn to S.R. & O. No. 52 of 1957, which
amends S.R. & O. No. 24 of 1951.
The effect of this amendment is to give the
Port Officer power to remove from the wharf and
Customs Area, at the risk and expense of Owners
or Consignees, any goods lying there for over 24
hours.
The object of this S.R. & O. is to enable
measures to be taken to relieve the congestion on
the wharf and the obstruction to traffic in the area
which is causAd when non-warehousable items of
goods are left; lying on the wharf and roadway for
unduly long periods.
Owners and Consignees are therefore requested
to co-operate with the Port Officer by having their
non-warehousable goods removed from the wharf
and roadway as e-tly as possible, and avoid having
to pay tue extra costs which would be incurred if
the Port Officer has to take action.

NOTICE.

INCOME TAX.



THE Income Tax Ordinance states: "Every
person chargeable with tax shall, on or before
the prescribed date in every year, deliver to the
Commissioner a true and correct return of the
whole of his income from every source whatsoever
for the year immediately preceding the year of
assessment, and shall, if absent from the Colony,
give the name and address of an agent in the
Colony."
2. Notices of Return have been sent out by the
Inland Revenue Department, but it is the duty of
taxpayers to ensure that they get such a form and
make a return as required by law. (Forms are
obtainable from the District Revenue Offices).
3. Failure to submit such a Return within the
prescribed time renders the taxpayer liable to a
penalty not exceeding 100% of the tax payable.

NOTICE.

INLAND REVENUE DEPARTMENT.


OTICEq of Employers Returns have been sent
to all Employers and Heads of Government
Departments, and the co-operation of these Em-
ployers is requested so that the returns may be
received at the Inland Revenue Department as
early as possible and not later than the 28th
February next.
The Income Tax Ordinance No. 32 of 1956
provides that it shall be the duty of every
employer to send in such a return. Failure to
do so within the prescribed period carries a
penalty not exceeding $750.00.

GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION.


THIS Examination will be held in June of this
year only.
There will be no examination in December.
The entry for a subject at Ordinary Level will
be 10/- ($2.40) and for a subject at Advanced Level
1. ($4.80).
Besides the above, a local fee of Four Dollars
($4.00) must be paid into the Treasury and for-
warded with the application for entry.
Candidates taking a subject requiring a practical
examination must pay an additional Four Dollars
($4.00) for each subject.
In addition tc the above each candidate will be
required to pay an initial entry fee of 10/- owing
to the increased cost of running the General
Certificate of Education Examination.
The closing date for entries to be received for
this examination is 31st January, 1958.

GEOLOGICAL SURVEYS DEPARTMENT.


Vacancy for Supervisor of Library
and Records.


APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably quali-
fled persons for appointment as Supervisor
of Library and Records, Geological surveys De-
partment.
2. Appointment and Salary: Non-pension-
able and in the salary scale $3,048-$3,840 per
annum: commencing salary commensurate with
qualifications and/or experience : appointment on
contract for three years renewable by mutual
consent would be allowed on request.
3. Duties : To compile a card index with cross
references, record the issue and return of books,
supervise the printing and distribution of depart-
mental publications, classify and index Geologists :
field note-books, reports and ether records, prepare
an index of mineral localities and of degree sheets,
and pei form such other duties as may be assigned
by the Head of the Department or other duly
authorized officer.
4. Qualifications: A good general education,
with either a School Certificate with four credits
of which one must be English Language, or the
General Certificate of Education with passes in
five subjects, including English Language and the
ability to typewrite. Candidates with a diploma
in library studies or a University degree will be
given first preference. Some experience in library
work, and a knowledge of Geology or a kindred
science, and of languages, particularly Spanish and
Portuguese, would be an advantage.
5. Age : Applicants should not be under 21 or
over 40 years of agg on the 31st January, 1958, i.e.
the closing date for the receipt of applications, but
the upper limit does not apply to persons already
employed by Government.
6. Medical fitness : The successful candidate,
if not already holding a pensionable post in Public
Service, will be required to pass a medical examin-
ation for admission thereto.
7. Leave : General Orders and existing regul-
ations on the subject provide five days' leave for
each completed month of resident service up to a
maximum of six months. A minimum tour of
service is two years.
8. General Information: Appointment will
be subject to Colonial Regulations, General Orders,
Stores Regulations, Financial Regulations, and
other local regulations in force from time to time
in so far as they are applicable. A candidate in
the West Indies, if successful, would be provided
with passages to British Guiana for himself, his
wife and children (if any), not exceeding five
persons in all, provided they either accompany
him to British Guiana or join him here within
twelve months of his departure for the Colony:
(Children to be under 18 years of age, unmarried
and dependent on the officer). A similar passage
concession will be granted, at Government expense,
for the officer and his family, back to the country
from which he was recruited, on satisfactory
completion of his contract.

year of birth, educational qualifications and exper-
ience, and accompanied by at least two recent
testimonials should be addressed to the Secretary,
Public Service Commission, General Post Office
Building, Georgetown, British Guiana, for delivery
not later than the 31st January, 1958.

Federal Government
Clerical Officers And Stenographers.

APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably quali-
fied persons for employment as Clerical Offi-
cers and Stenographers in the service of the Federal
Government of The West Indies. While candidates
from any territory in the British Caribbean area
are at liberty to apply it is regretted that no assis-
tance can be given towards the cost of travelling
to the Federal Capital incurred by any candidate
selected for interview or appointment.
2. The appointments will be on probation for
a period of three months. If confirmed in their
appointments, candidates will become eligible for
any pensionable benefits which may be approved
by the Federal Government, equally with members
of the government services in the region who are
transferred to the Federal Service.
3. This advertisement is designed to elicit appli-
cations from candidates not at present in govern-
ment service. Applications from persons in gov-
ernment service can only be considered if submitted
through, and with the approval of, the employing
government. Those persons who have already
applied for temporary employment as typists or
stenographers need not apply again. Candidates
selected for temporary employment and desirous
of being considered for permanent employment
will be considered in due course along with other
candidates, if they satisfy the requirements indi-
cated below.
4. The qualifications required for these posts are
as follows :--
Clerical Officers, Grades I and II
(a) a Cambridge School Certificate or equivalent
qualification, with a credit in English. Can-
didates not possessing a credit in English,
and who are otherwise suitable, will be
required to take a qualifying test in English,
unless they have previously passed a similar
qualifying test for entry to the Civil Service
of a Unit Government in The West Indies;
(b) considerable experience of clerical work in
Government or other public service, indus-
try or cominnorce.
Stenographers
(a) a Cambridge School Certificate, or equivalent
qualification, with a credit in English. Can-
didates not possessing a credit in English,
and who are otherwise suitable, will be
required to take a qualifying test in English,
unless they have previously passed a similar
qualifying test for entry to the Civil Service
of a Unit Government in the West Indies ;
(b) a shorthand speed of at least 100 words per
minute, and a typing speed of 50 words per
minute.
Candidates for the post of Stecographer who
fulfil the above requirements will be required to
take a test in shorthand and typing.


5. Salary Scales.
Clerical Oficer, Grade I: $2,640x120-$3,600
Clerical Officer, Grade II: $1,680x120-$2,640
Stenographer : $1,680x120-$2,640
Entry into the salary scale will normally be at
the minimum but in special cases candidates may
enter at a higher point.
6. Method of A.pplication.
Applications must be submitted on a form which
may be obtained from the Federal Organisation,
"Whitehall", Port of Spain, and he addressed to
the Federal Secretary. Applications should be
accompanied by acceptable evidence of School
Certificate qualification and by two testimonials,
with copies. Appointment will be made only after
reference to the Interim Federal Public Service
Commission or its permanent successor bo3y.

Vacant Pensionable Post Of Estimator/Chief
Draughtsman Public Works Department,

ALARY $2,592 x 96-$3,168 plus 20 per cent
pensionable pay addition. Transport allow-'
ance in accordance with local rates. Qualifications
-Secondary Education, with sound knowledge of
Mathematics and English and a completed Course
in draughting from Bennet College, I.C.S., Institu-
tion of Engineering Designers or other recognized
authority.

Vacant Post Of Graduate Master, St. George's
College, Barataria.

APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably
qualified graduates of approved Universities
for appointment to the post of Graduate Master or
Mistress, St. George's (Co-educational) to teach
Physics.
2. The post is pensionaple and carries salary in
the scale $3,600 x 120-$4,320 x 240-$6,000 per
annum. There is a bar at the point $5,040 per
annum for graduates whose degrees are not recog-
nised as Honours degrees. A Cost of Living
Allowance is payable on salaries not exceeding
$4,320 per annum. A commencing salary higher
than the minimum may be paid depending on the
qualifications and experience of the candidate
selected.
3. The candidate selected will be required to
teach Physics to at least School Certificate stan-
dard and will be liable to be transferred to a
similar post in any Government College. Prefer-
ence will be given to an applicant who is also
qualified to teach Mathematics. The ability to
assist in Games and Physical Training will be an
additional qualification.
4. The appointment will be subject to medical
fitness and on probation for a period of two years.
5. Applications containing full particulars of the
candidates including experience should be forward-
ed to the Colonial Secretary, Colonial Secretariat,
Trinidad, British West Indies, not later than 31st
January, 1958.
