Notice to Importers & Exporters.

THE attention of Importers and Exporters is
S drawn to S.R. & O. No. 52 of 1957, which
amends S.R. & 0. No. 24 of 1951.
The effect of this amendment is to give the
Port Officer power to remove from the wharf and
Customs Area, at the risk and expense of Owners
or Consignees, any goods lying there for over 24
hours.
The object of this S.R. & 0. is to enable
measures to be taken to relieve the congestion on
the wharf and the obstruction to traffic in the area
which is caused when non-warehousable items of
goods are left lying on the wharf and roadway for
unduly long periods.
Owners and Consignees are therefore requested
to co-operate with the Port Officer by having their
non-warehousable goods removed from the wharf
and roadway as early as possible, and avoid having
to pay the extra costs which would be incurred if
the Port Officer has to take action.

NOTICE.

INCOME TAX.

Tr ~E Income Tax Ordinance states: "Every
L person chargeable with tax shall, on or before
the prescribed date in every year, deliver to the
Commissioner a true and correct return of the
whole of his income from every source whatsoever
for the year immediately preceding the year of
assessment, and shall, if absent from the Colony,
give the name and address of an agent in the
Colony."
2. Notices of Return have been sent out by the
Inland Revenue Department, but it is the duty of
taxpayers to ensure that they get such a form and
make a return as required by law. (Forms are
obtainable from the District Revenue Offices).
3. Failure to submit such a Return within the
prescribed time renders the taxpayer liable to a
penalty not exceeding 100% of the tax payable.

INLAND REVENUE DEPARTMENT.

OTICEz of Employers Returns have been sent
to all Employers and Heads of Government
Departments, and the co-operation of these Em-
ployers is requested so that the returns may be
received at the Inland Revenue Department as
early as possible and no' lIter than the 28th
February next.
The Income Tax Ordinance No. 32 of 1956
provides that it shall he the duty of every
employer to send in. such a return. Failure to
do so within the prescribed period carries a
penalty not exceeding $750.00.

GENERAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION.

k~I1IS Examination will be held in June of this
T year only.
SThere kill be no examination in December.
The entry for a subject at Ordinary Level will
be 10/- ($2.10) and for a subject at Advancsd Level
1. ($4.80).
Besides the above, a local fee of Fcur Dollars
($4.00) must be paid into the Treasury and for-
warded with the application for entry.
Candidates taking a subject requiring a practical
-examination must pay an additional Four Dollars
($4.00) for each subject.
In addition to the above each candidate will be
required to pay an initial entry fee of 10/- owing
to the increased cost of running the General
Certificate of Education Examination.


PPLICATIONS are invited from suitably
qualified graduates of approved Universities
for appointment to the post of Graduate Master or
Mistress, St. George's (Co-educational) to teach
Physics.
9. The post is pensiohaple and carries salary in
the scale $3,600 x 120-$4,320 x 240-$6,000 per
annum. There is a bar at the point $5,040 per
annum for graduates whose degrees are not recog-
nised as Honours degrees. A Cost of Living
Allowance is payable on salaries not exceeding
$4,320 per annum. A commencing salary higher
than the minimum may h paid depending on the
qualifications and experience of the candidate
selected.
3. The candidate selected will be required to
teach Physics to at least School Certificate stan-
dard and will be liable to be transferred to a
similar post in any Government College. Prefer-
ence will be given to an applicant who is also
qualified to teach Mathematics. The ability to
assist in Games and Phys.cal Training will be an
additional qualification.
4. The appointment will be subject to medical
fitness and on probation for a period of two years.

NOTICE.

GEOLOGICAL SURVEYS DEPARTMENT.

Vacancy for Supervisor of Library
and Records.


APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably quali-
fied persons for appointment as Supervisor
of Library and Records, Geological Surveys De-
partment.
2. Appointment and Salary: Non-pension-
able and in the salary scale $3,048-$3,840 per
annum: commencing salary commensurate with
qualifications and/or experience : appointment on
contract for three years renewable by mutual
consent would be allowed on request.
3. Duties: To compile a card index with cross
references, record the issue and return of books,
supervise the printing and distribution of depart.
mental publications, classify and index Geologists:
field note-books, reports and other records, prepare
an index of mineral localities and of degree sheets,
and perform such other duties as may be assigned
by the Head of the Department or other duly
authorised officer.
4. Qualifications: A good general education,
with either a School Certificate with four credits
of which one must be English Language, or the
General Certificate of Education with passes in
five subjects, including English Language and the
ability to typewrite. Candidates with a diploma
in library studies or a University degree will be
given first preference. Some experience in library
work, and a knowledge of Geology or a kindred
science, and of languages, particularly Spanish and
Portuguese, would be an advantage.
5. Age : Applicants should not be under 21 or
over 40 years of age on the 31st January, 1958, i.e.
the closing date for the receipt of applications, but
the upper limit does not apply to persons already
employed by Government.
6. Medical fitness: The successful candidate,
if not already holding a pensionable post in Public
Service, will be required to pass a medical examin-
ation for admission thereto.
7. Leave: General Orders and existing regul-
ations on the subject provide five days' leave for
each completed month of resident service up to a
maximum of six months. A minimum tour of
service is two years.
8. General Information: Appointment will
be subject to Colonial Regulations, General Orders,


Stores Regulations, Financial Regulations, and
other local regulations in force from time to time
in so far as they are applicable. A candidate in
the West Indies, if successful, would be provided
with passages to British Guiana for himself, his
wife and children (if any), not exceeding five
persons in all, provided they either accompany
him to British Guiana or join him here within
twelve months of his departure for the Colony:
(Children to be under 18 years of age, unmarried
and dependent on the officer). A similar passage
concession will he granted, at Government expense,
for the officer and his family, back to the country
from which he was recruited, on satisfactory
completion of his contract.
9. Applications stating name in full, date and
year of birth, educational qualifications and exper-
ien-e, and accompanied by at least two recent
testimonials should be addressed to the Secretary,
Public Service Commission, General Post Office
Building, Georgetown, British Guiana, for delivery
not later than the 31st January, 19f58.
