Notice To Owners And Masters.

Use of Lifelines when working in Hatchways.

T1HE crew of a ship were recently engaged at sea
Sin preparing a feeder in a hatchway to be used
when the ship entered port to load a cargo of grain.
While one man was adjusting the staging inside
the feeder the motion of the ship caused him to let
go his hold on the hauling part of the stage rope.
The staging collapsed and the man fell to the
bottom of the hold. He suffered severe concussion
and died almost at once,
The attention of masters is drawn to the im-
portance of ensuring that lifelines are at all times
secured to men when working over empty holds.
