NOTICE.

FEDERAL ESIABLISHIVENF OF TdHE
WEST INDIES.


Applications are invited for the following posts
in the Federal Information Service :-
(a) Reference Librarian :
The duties will entail the assembly of a
basic collection of reference books and
papers with particular regard to Federal
affairs and the general development of
emergent nations within the British Com-
monwealth. Professional qualification in
librarianship, and at least 3 years' experience
in a Public Library are required. Appli-
cants who have a degree in Arts or tihe
Social Sciences will recvivo special con-
sideration.
Salary scale $3,600 x 240-.74,800 per annum.
(a) Broadcasting Assistant:
Duties will involve the preparation of
news programmes and the production of
talks and discussions on Federal affairs.
Professional experience in the preparation
of radio programmes and an interest in,
and detailed knowledge of, current affairs
required. Applicants with a degree in Arts
or Social Sciences will receive special con-
sideration.
Salary scale $4.080 x 240-$5,520 per annum.


(c) Press Officer :
Duties will involve the preparation of
communiques for release to the press, to
write feature stories for the distribution to
newspapers throughout the region and to
edit a monthly magazine on Federal affairs
for circulation in the West Indies. Pro-
fessional experience as a reporter or editor
on a West Indian paper and a detailed
knowledge, of current affairs in the West
Indies essential.
Salary scale $1,080 x 240-$5,520 per annum.
(d) Liaison Officer:
\Vill be required to keep in close associa-
tion with Government Departments and all
Information Agencies in the ar(a, for the
purpose of collecting materials for the pur-
pose of collecting materials for broadcasting
and publishing. Also required to meet
visiting journalists, to arrange interviews
for them and to facilitate their search for
stories, pictures, etc. Professional ex-
perience in journalism or broadcasting
essential.
Salary scale $3,600 x 240-$4,800 per annum.
General Conditions of Service.
Consideration will be given to appointment
above the minimum of the salary scale to candi-
dates with special qualifications.
All officers will be required to serve in Barbados
in the first instance and subsequently in Trinidad
when Federal Headquarters move to that Colony.
The Liaison Officer may be required to serve
outside Barbados and Trinidad.
Quarters are not provided in Barbados but
officers recruited from outside that Colony who are
not normally resident in Barbados will be eligible
for a separation allowance during the interim
period until Federal Headquarters move to Trinidad.
The exact amount of this allowance has y-t to be
determined. Quarters will be provided in Trinidad
at a rental of 10 per cent of Salary. If heavy,
basic, furniture is required, this will be supplied on
payment of a rental of 5 per cant p!r annum of
the value of the furniture. No separation allowance
will be payable when the Federal Headquarters
are established in Trinidad.
Free passages by the cheapest and most direct
route would be provided on appointment for the
officer, his wife and dependent children, up to a
maximum of five persons in all.
Vacation leave will be granted at most favour-
able rate applied to equivalent grade of officer by
any federating Unit Government. The exact
amount has yet to be determined.
Leave passages will be provided, not exceeding
the cost of three adult return passages to the
United Kingdom, after a minimum tour of not less
than 4 years.
Free medical attention not provided but cost of
operative treatment, X-ray examination and
bacteriological services for the officer himself would
be met.
Subsistence allowance payable at the approved
rate when travelling on duty.
Applications accompanied by the names of two
references should be submitted to Government
Office not later than 1st September, 1957.

Notice To Owners And Masters.

Use of Lifelines when working in Hatchways.

THE crew of a ship were recently engaged at sea
in preparing a feeder in a hatchway to he used
when the ship entered port to load a cargo of grain.
While one man was adjusting the staging inside
the feeder the motion of the ship caused him to let
go his hold on the hauling part of the stage rope.
The staging collapsed ;and the man fell t3 the
bottom of the hold. He suffered severe concussion
and died almost at once,
The attention of masters is drawn to the im-
portance of ensuring th it lifelines are at all times
secured to men when working over empty holds.

THE Hope Bridge on the Eastern AMain Road
will be closed to vehicular traffic as from the
19th August until further notice to allow P. W. D.
reconstruction work. A diversion through the
Hope Estate making use of the old road will be
provided during this period. Road signs will be
erected for the guidance of motorists.

Post of Engineering Assistant, Public Works
Department, Grenada, B. W. I.


SPPLICATIONS are invited from suitably
qualified persons for appointment to the post
of Engineering Assistant, Public Works Depart-
ment, Grenada, B. W. I.
Appointment: The post which is permanent
and pensionable, carries a salary scale of $2,880 x
$120-$3,840 per annum, together with a pension-
able pay addition of 20 per cent at all stages of
salary. The point of entry into the scale will be
determined according to the candidate's qualification
and experience.
Qualifications : Applications from qualified
civil or structural engineers will be given priority,
but other applicants must produce evidence to show
that they have the basic knowledge and experience
to carry out satisfactorily the duties which they
will be called upon to perform.
Duties : The successful applicant will be ex-
pected to design structures in steel, reinforced
concrete and timber, and prepare working drawings
of such structures. His duties will include the
preparation of all kinds of civil engineering works
being carried out by contract or by direct labour.
He will be expected to exercise rigid financial
control over such projects. He will also be re-
quired to perform such other duties as may be
assigned to him by the Superintendent of Public
Works.
Quarters : Quarters are not provided.
Passages: Free fist class passages to Grenada
will be provided for the Officer, his wife and
children not exceeding five persons in all; children
should be under 18 years of age, unmarried and
dependent on the officer.
Leave and Leave Passages : Vacation leave
on full salary will be granted at the rate of 45 days
per annum, and may be accumulated up to a
maximum period of 180 days.
Leave passages will be provided in accordance
with local regulations.
Medical Attention: Free medical attention
and medicines are not provided.

AGRICULTURE.

Apprenticeship Scheme.



A PPLICATIONS are invited for the four Agri-
cultural Apprenticeships shortly to become
vacant in the Department of Agriculture.
2. The course of training will be for a period of
one year, commencing on the 1st October, 1957.
Successful candidates will be required to reside at:
Mt. Mcritz Agricultural Station-October to
December 1957.
Westeihall Agricultual Station-January to
March 1958.
Mt. Home and Boulogne Cocoa Stations-
April to June 1958.
In July and August 1958 Apprentices will be
attached to the Extension Staff of the Department,
and during this period may be required to work in
any part of the Island.
3. Successful candidates will receive an allow-
ance of one Dollar ($1.00) per working day during
the period of the Course, and will be required to
make their own arrangements for board and lodge,
although quarters may be provided where they are
available
4. The Government accepts no responsibility
for providing employment to Apprentices on the
completion of their Course.
5. Applicants, should be between the ages of 18
and 24 should state age, School or Schools attended
with Standard or Certificate attained, past and
present employment, and emoluments earned at
the present time, experience in agriculture and the
facilities which they expect will be available to them
for practising agriculture after their period of Ap-
prenticeship.
6. Applications should be addressed to the
Superintendent of Agriculture, Tanteen, St.
George's and should reach that address not later
than 31st August, 1957.
The envelope containing the application should
be marked "Apprenticeship" on the outside.

NOTICE TO MARINERS.

Trinidad West Coast Port Of Spain Harbour.

A Light Buoy painted red marked D in
white, exhibiting a light flashing green every
second has been moored 900 feet W.S.W. of No. 7
Beacon within the Harbour of Port of Spain, in
position Latitude 10' 38' 40" N. Longitude
610 32' 00" W. This buoy marks the South
Eastern Corner of a rectangle, with N. and S.
sides I', E. and W. sides i', forming a special
anchorage for small craft loaded with dangerous
cargo.
This anchorage is reserved and can only be used
with the written permission of the Harbour Master.

NOTICE

Vacant Posts of Assistant Agricultural Superinten-
dents British Guiana.

WO vacancies exist for Assistant Agricultural
Superintendents, pensionable, on the salary
scale $3,438 x $144- $3,840 x $144 $4,560 per
annum : initial salary commensurate with pro-
fessional qualifications and post-qualification
experience. Appointment is subject to medical
fitness and to a p-obationary period of two years.
Duties : These relate primarily to the Exten-
sion Service of the Department. Officers will be
required to live in rural districts and will be
responsible to the Agricultural Superintendent or
duly authorized senior officer for Departmental
services to farmers, which include supervision of
demonstration stations and nurseries; execution of
programmes for improving the efficiency of farms;
general agricultural development including service
on Regional Development Committees; investiga-

tion and supervision of agricultural loans and
grants; administration of Agricultural legislation;
promotion and co-ordination at district level of
specialist services of the Department e.g. Agri-
cultural Education in primary schools, Rural Youth
Clubs, Artificial Insemination Service, Agricultural
Economic Surveys, etc., and such other duties as
may from time to time be assigned.
Qualifications: A 13. Sc. degree in Agriculture
the D.I.C.T.A. or a diploma in Agriculture accept-
able as the equivalent normally obtainable in three
years or long and meritorious service in a com-
parable capacity in an Agricultural Department.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing
both the stated qualification and suitable experience.
General: Leave and Leave Passages are
granted in accordance with the Leave and Leave
Passages Regulations. (Applicable to candidates
from Overseas only). On appointment passages
will be paid for the officer, wife and children (under
18 years and unmarried) not exceeding five pas-
sages in all. A candidate who is not in the Public
Service and who is over 40 years of age will
normally be appointed on contract. In this event
a gratuity of 224% of salary will be payable in
respect of each completed period of three months
satisfactory service. (Applicable to candidates
from over overseas only). (A passage back to the
place of recruitment will he provided on the satis-
factory termination of the period of contract).
The opportunity to qualify for advancement to
the grade of Agricultural Superintendent would be
given to those who show satisfactory promise
after a minimum period of not less than six years
service.
Quarters are not provided but where available,
rental at the rate of 10% of salary is payable in
respect of unfurnished quarters.

Department, Barbados.

PPLICATIONS are invited for appointment
to the above post.
2. Qualification : Candidates should be exempt
from or have passed the Final Parts I and II of
the Examination of the Institution of Civil
Engineers and have had a total of three years
training and practical experience.
3. Duties: Design; preparation 'of plans and
estimates of work; and supervision of labour.
4. Conditions of Service: Post is pensionable
and appointment subject to medical fitness and
two years probation. Salary scale $4,560 x $192-
$5,520 x $240-$6,240. Entry into scale will be
determined in the light of qualifications and


experience : salary subject to deduction at rate of
4% under Widows and Orphans Pension Scheme.
Travelling Allowance payable in respect of travel
on duty. Officer eligible for loan towards purchase
of car.
5. Passages: Passages of officer and family
are payable on appointment up to a maximum of
$1,920. Leave passages for officer and wife are
payable every three and a half years.
6. Leave: Vacation leave rate of 45 days a
year accumulative to 180 days.

Vacant post of Chief Agricultural Extension
Officer Department of Science and
Agriculture.

APPLICATIONS are invited for the post of
SChief Agricultural Extension Officer in the
Department of Science and Agriculture, Barbados.
2. The post is pensionable and the salary is in
the scale $3,528 x 144-4,392 : 4,560 x 192-4,944
per annum. Entry into the salary scale will be
determined according to the qualifications and ex-
perience of the candidate. A loan is obtainable
towards the purchase of a motor vehicle, and
travelling allowance is payable in accordance with
the Public Officers Loan and Travelling Allowances
Regulations. Appointment will be subject to med'-
cal fitness, and will be on probation for two years
in the first instance. No quarters are provided.
3. The main duties of the post are those associat-
ed with agricultural extension, in all its aspects,
among small scale agriculturists, including the
supervision and direction of agricultural extension
officers.
4. The minimum qualification is the Diploma of
the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture or its
equivalent and several years experience in the field.
5. Applications stating age, qualifications, exper-
ience and present emoluments should be addressed
to the Director of Agriculture, Department of

and should be submitted not later than the 15th

AN ARCHIVIST.

PPLICATIONS are invited from suitably
qualified persons for appointment as Archi-
vist in the Central Secretariat-Chief Secretary's
Office, (British Guiana).
1. Appointment and Salary: The post is
pensionable and on salary scale A 3 :$3,696 x $144-
$4,560 x $240-$6,720 per annum. The point of
entry will be determined according to qualifications
and/or experience.

2. Duties :
(i) To establish a Government Archives
Department and to train a local officer in
archives administration;
(ii) to preserve, catalogue and arrange the
archives in orderly manner, including
records of historical interest within, anc
where so required outside, the Govern-
ment Department ;
(iii) to he responsible for thQ bibliography of
British Guiana;
(iv) to provide information based on historical
research ;
(v) to draft regulations to govern the regular
transfer of documents from Government
Departments to the archives ;
(vi) to formulate a system of controlled
destruction of documents not worthy of
permanent pr. s -rvation; and
(vii) to perform such other duties relating to
archives as the Government may deem
to be necessary.
3. Qualifications : The undermentioned mini-
mum qualifications or their equivalent are
required :--
A first or second class Honours Degree from
an English University cr from a Univer-
sity in the British Commonwealth.
Special consideration will he given to holders
of the Diploma offered by the School of
Librarianship and A archives at the Univer-
sity of London or any other approved
University.
4. Age : Candidates should not be under 25
years or over 40 years of age at 31st August,
1957. This qualification is not applicable to
persons already holding pensionable posts in the
Public Service.
5. Medical fitness : The successful candidate
if not already holding a pensionable post in the
Public Service, will be required to pass a medical
examination for admission thereto.
6. Leave and Leave Passages will be
granted in accordance with the General Orders
and existing Regulations on the subject.
7. Quarters : Quarters are not provided.
8. General Information : Appointment will
be subject to the Colonial Regulations, General
Orders, and other local regulations in force from
time lo time. Unless the candidate appointed al-
ready holds a post on the permanent and pension-
able establishment, confirmation in the appoint-
ment will be subject to satisfactory work and
conduct during a probationary period of two years.
The successful candidate may be required to
undertake a course of further training in the United
Kingdom.

Vacant Posts Of Staff Nurse, Health
Department (Tuberculosis Division.)

TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO.

PPLICATIONS are invited for appointment
as Staff Nurses in the Tuberculosis Division
of the Health Department, Trinidad and Tobogo.
2. Appointment is subject to medical fitness, on
agreement for two years in the first instance with
salary in the scale $900 x 60-$1,20C x 120 -
$1,566 per annum, plus cost of living allowance,
with effect from the date of assumption of duty.
A commencing salary above the minimum of the
scale may be paid on the basis of one increment
for each year of approved post graduate experience
with retrospective effect from the date of assum-
tion of duty after six (6) months' satisfactory
service.
3. Hostel accommodation, including free meals,
free uniforms, and free laundering of uniforms is
provided. Vacation leave, sick leave and local
leave will also be granted in accordance with the
provisions of the local Civil Service Leave Regu-
lations.
4. Candidates must be in possession of a Certi-
ficate in General Nursing or an equivalent or
superior certificate, and should be between 23 and
40 years of age. Preference will be given to can-
didates with experience in tuberculosis work.
5. Passage to Trinidad and return passage to
place of recruitment for the officer only, will be
paid by the Trinidad Government.
6. Applications should be addressed to the
Director of Medical Services and should reach him
not later than the 31st August, 1957. Copies and

WORKS AND HYDRAULICS DEPARTMENT-VACANT

a pensionable post of Executive Engineer,
Drainage Branch in the Works and Hydraulics
Department, Trinidad, B.W.I.
The duties of the post comprise investigation,
design, construction and maintenance, under the
control and general supervision of the Chief
Drainage Engineer, of drainage, irrigation and
reclamation works includingg river improvements
cutting, realignment, and protection), water control

tract, a gratuity is payable at six-monthly periods
or in a single lump sum at the end of the contract,
calculated at the rate of 222/% of salary for each
completed period of three months' service. If the
gratuity is paid in a single lump sum leave would
earn gratuity.
2. Duties: To carry out such functions and
duties as are normally assigned to Masters at
Secondary Grammar Schools, and in particular to
teach the subjects of the posts to which they are
appointed at any level required in the school, (age
range of pupils 10 19 years) which annually pre-
sents candidates for the Advanced Level of the
General Certificate of Education: to take some
part in out of school activities, including games,
and to perform such other duties as may be assign-
ed by the Principal, Queen's College or other duly
authorised officer.
3. Qualifications: A general Degree from a
University within the British Commonwealth, on
its equivalent in the particular subject of the post
to which appointment is to be made. Preference
will be given to candidates with Honours Degrees.
The Diploma in Education and/or teaching exper-
ience in secondary schools will be an advantage.
4. Age: Candidates should not be under 23
years or over 40 years of age on the 31st August,
1957. (This is not applicable to persons already
holding pensionable posts in the Public Service or
to candidates who are appointed under contract).


5. Medical Fitness : The successful candi-
dates if not already holding pensionable posts in
the Public Service, will be required to pass a medi-
cal examination for admission thereto.
6. Leave and Leave Passages Will be
granted in accordance with the General Orders and
existing Regulations on the subject.
7. General Information : Appointment will
be subject to the Colonial Regulations, General
Orders, and other local regulations in force from
time t: time. Unless the successful candidates
already hold posts on the permanent and pension-
able establishment, confirmation in the appoint-
ment will be subject to satisfactory work and con-
duct during a probationary period of twelve
months.
8. Applications stating name in full, date and
year of birth, educational qualifications and ex-
perience, and accompanied by at least two recent
testimonials should be addressed to the Chief Es-
tablishment Officer, Establishment Department,
Public Buildings, Gt orgetown (British Guiana) to
reach him not later than 31st August, 1957.

submit their applications to the Heads of their
Departments for transmission to the Chief Estab-
lishment Officer not later than 27th August, 1957.
Applications received after these dates will not be
considered. Testimonials are not required from
