'lHE Minister of Trade and Production intends
1 calling a meeting of all banana growers in
the Colony to discuss with them the advisability
of finding an amount within the funds available
for rehabilitation for the purpose of repairing
roads in all the banana areas, as the matter of
road repairs has received strong representations
to Government from all quarters dealing with the
banana industry.

TOTICE is hereby given that the assessment
list for Water Rates for the year 1957, is
finally determined, and may be seen at the Trea-
sury, St. George's and the respective District
Revenue Offices, between the 1st day of May and
the 31st day of July, 1957, and that d)tendance
will be given during that period for the purpose of
receiving the rates fixed by the several District
Financial Secretary.

FpHE Government of India have invited applica-
1 tions for the award of seven Scholarships to
deserving students from the British West Indies
and British Guiana under their Cultural Scholar-
ships Scheme '.I58-59. Five of these will be dis-
tributed among students of Indian origin as
follows :-Two from Trinidad, two from British
Guiana and one from the other Colonies. The re-
maining two are reserved for students of African
origin from the Caribbean region.
Applicants should have passed at least the
Cambridge School Certificate Examination with
Grade I or its equivalent. Preference. however,
will be given to candidates with higher qualifica-
tions and those who wish to pursue post-graduate
courses of study in India.
These scholarships are awarded for studies in
Arts, Humanities, Science, Agriculture, Medecine,
Technology, Education, Forestry. Veterinary
Science and Engineering. Candidates for admis-
sion to medical colleges should have passed the
Higher School Certificate Examination or its equi-
valent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology; those
for Engineering, with Mathematics, Physics and
Chemistry. The value of each scholarship tenable
for the duration of the selected course of study is
Rs. 200/-($72 00) p.m. excluding tuition, examina-
tion and capitation fees which are paid by the
Government of India separately. The cost of
passages to India and back will, however, have to
be defrayed by the candidates themselves.
Candidates wishing to be considered for the
award of scholarships may write to the India
Commission, 78 Marine Square, Port-of-Spain,
Trinidad, for the prescribed application blanks

stating their present educational qualifications and
the courses they would like to take up in India.
Applications complete in all respects should be
sent before 15th July. The names of candidates
selected by the Government of India for the award
of scholarships will be announced in due course.



APPLICATIONS are invited for the post of
Co-operatives Officer in the Co-operatives
Department, Grenada, particulars of which are as
Salary: The salary of the post will be in the
scale $2,016 x 96-$2,400 x 120-$2,680 together with
20% increase of salary. The post is pensionable.
Allowances: A tr sport allowance at the rate
of $912 per annum will also be payable.
Quarters : Quarters are not provided. Should
Government quarters become available at any time
rental would be charged at the rate of 10% of salary
or 5% of the assessed value of the quarters, which-
ever is less.
Duties : The duties cf the officer will be to assist
the Registrar of Co-operatives in the promotion,
supervision and guidance of Co-operative Societies.
He would particularly be concerned with producers'
and marketing co-operatives.
Age : The officer should, if possible, be between
the ages of 25 and 35.
Qualifications : Candidates should passes the
School Certificate or have a gcod fundamental
Agricultural training at an approved institution
would also be a pre-requnsite.
Leave : The officer will be eligible for leave in
accordance with local regulations.
Applications giving full particulars of applicant's
age, experience and qualifications should be ad-
dressed to the Secretary, Public Service Com-
mission, Government Oflice, renada, to reach him
not later than the 30th Jldy, 1957.

PPLICATIONS are invited from single women
between the ages of 19 and 30 years for the
post of Woman Police Officer in the Grenada
Police Force. All applications must be in the
hand-writing of the applicant. Following condit-
ions of service will apply.
(i) Salary will be in the scale of $672 x $24
(ii) Post is pensionable.
(iii) Free uniform will be provided.
(iv) Quarters are not provided but a Rent-in-Aid
Allowance is being considered.
(v) Free Medical and Dental treatment is
(vi) Leave of 30 days per year accumulative to
90 days is allowed.
(vii) No person will be appointed who does not
satisfy the requirements of education,
character, and physical fitness.
(viii) Minimum height for enlistment is 5' 4".

APPLICATIONS are invited from suitably
qualified candidates for appointment to the
post of Senior Draughtsman, Windward Islands,
particulars of which are as follows :-
Appointment: The post is non-pensionable, and
appointment will be on a temporary contractual
basis for a period of 18 months in the first in-
stance. The officer will be subject to the Colonial
Regulations and the local General Orders for the
time being in force, so far as they are applicable.
The officer will be a member of the staff of the
Executive Architect, Windward Islands, and will
be stationed in St. Lucia.
Qualifications: Applicants should have had at
least 5 years experience of work usually under-
taken by an Architect's Office and be thoroughly
conversant wish the preparation of working draw-
ings and specifications.

provided for the officer, his wife and children, not
exceeding 5 persons in all; children to be under 18
years of age, unmarried, and dependent on the
officer. Free return passages will also be provided
on the satisfactory termination of the period of
Leave: Vacation leave on full salary will be
granted at the rate of one week for each completed
period of 3 months resident service. Such leave
to be taken on the satisfactory termination of the
officer's contract.
Medical Attention: Free medical attention
and medicines are not provided.
Taxation : All Government officers are liable
to taxation imposed by local legislation.

reacn him not later than the 31st July, 1957.



General Certificate of Education.

T1IS examination will be held in November-
December of this year. The entry fee for a
subject at Ordinary Level will be ten shillings and
for a subject at Advanced Level one pound.
Besides the above, a local fee of Four Dollars
must be paid into the Treasury and forwarded
with the application for entry. Candidates taking
a Science subject requiring a practical examination
must pay an additional Four Dollars for each
Candidates must take the full number of six
subjects except they have passed the Cambridge
School Certificate Examination.
The closing dite for entries to be received for
the November Examination is 31st July, 1957.

PPLICATIONS are invited from suitably

post of Director of Works, Dominica, particulars
of which are as follows :-
1. Appointment: The post is on the per-
manent and pensionable establishment and the
appointment carries with it the liability to transfer
to any post of equivalent status within the Wind-
ward Islands. An appointment may, however, be
made on a temporary non-pensionable contractual
basis for a period of 3 years in the first instance.
2. Salary: The salary is in the scale 1,300 x
25- 1,500 per annum.

meant and for the planning and execution of Public
Works development schemes as well as the general
supervision of all aspects of the department's
work. By virtue of his office the officer is a
member of various Boards and Committees. He
will also be required to perform such other duties
as may from time to time be assigned to him by
the Administrator.
5. Qualifications: The officer must be a
Corporate Member of the Institute of Civil
Engineers, or hold some qualification of equivalent
status and should have good administrative ex-
perience and ability.
6. Quarters : Quarters are not provided.
Should Government quarters become available at
any time rental would be charged at the rate of
10% of salary or 5% of the assessed value of the
quarters, whichever is less.
7. Passages : Free passages to Dominica will
be provided on first appointment for the officer,
his wife and children, not exceeding five persons
in all. Children to be under 18 years of age, un-
married and dependent on the officer. In the case
of a contract appointment free return passages
will be provided on the satisfactory completion of
the contract.
8. Leave & Leave Passages: Vacation leave
will be granted at the rate of 45 days for each
completed period of 12 months resident service
and may be accumulated up to a maximum of
180 d'ys. In the case of a contract appointment,
vacation leave will be granted at the rate of 1 week
for each completed period of 3 months resident
service; such leave to be taken on the satisfactory
completion of the period of engagement. Leave
passages arc provided in accordance with the
Windward Islands Leave Passage Regulations.
9. General Information: The officer will be
liable to all taxation imposed by local enactments.
He will also be subject to the Colonial Regulations,
local General Orders, and Financial and Store
Rules and subsidiary legislation In force for the
time being.

Appointment of Regional Agricultural Econo-
mist to work on inter-territorial trade
on foodstuffs.

N Agricultural Economist is required imrre-
diately to carry on an existing project for
investigation of the present and potential food
production and consumption in the British West
Indies. Minimum qualifications:-
A degree in Agricultural Economics with 2 years
Post-graduate training preferably in Field Market-
ing and Statistics. Practical experience in Field
of production Economics would be an advantage.
Salary will be fixed according to qualifications
and experience within range of [1250 to [2100.
The selected candidate will initially be based at
Barbados and subsistence allowance will be payable
for travelling on duty elsewhere. The appointment
will be on contract for a period concluding 31st
March, 1960.

APPLICATION'l are invited for appointment to
the above post.
2. Qualifications: Associate Member of the
Town Planning Institute. Applicants should have
recognized training in town planning with sone
experience in the Colonies.
3. Duties : The officer will b3 required to set
up and to head a new department to deal with town
and country development planning. Ho will also
have to administer Town and Count y Plannirng
legislation shortly to he enacted. It will be neces-
sary for the officer to undertake inter alia the
following duties :--
