Quarantine Station will be under the control of
the Ministry for Social Services.
2. The Rest House at Carriacou will remain

tinue to be made at the District Office, Carriacou.

VACANT POST.

Shorthand Writer, Legislative Council,
Grenada.

PPLICATIONS are invited from suitably
.1l qualified candidates fcr ap;'ointment to the
vacant post of Shorthand Writer, Legislative Coun-
cil, Grenada. The post which is that of an Adminis-
trative Assist nt in the General Civil service, is
pensionable. The successful candidate will, how-
ever, be on probation for one year in the first
instance. On the satisfacto y conclusion of the
probationary appointment, the appointee will be
confirmed The appointee will bo subject to
Colonial Regulations, General Orders, Financial
Rules, and such other Orders as may from time
to time be in force.
2. The salary attached to the post is in the
scale $2,592 x $96-$2,880 together with a pension-
able pay addition of 20 per cent of salary. A
point of entry in the scale may he fixed in
accordance with the candidate's qualifications and
experience.
3. The duties of the Shorthand Writer are as
follows :-
(i) attending meetings of the Legislative
Council and recording the proceedings
accurately in shorthand
(ii) transcribing the notes taken and making
typewritten copies thereof;
(iii) undertaking any other duties that may be
assigned by the Administrator.
4. Candidates should be in possession of at least
the Cambridge School Certificate or its equivalent,
and must be capable of writing accurate shorthand
at a speed of not less than 150 words per minute
and of typewriting at a speed of not less than 60
words per minute. Previous experience in legisla-
ture and court reporting will be an advantage.
5. Vacation leave is earned at the rate of 45
days for each completed month of resident service
up to a maximum of 180 days, subject to the com-
pletion of a minimum tour of service of two years.
6. A candidate, if selected from overseas, would
be provided with passages to Grenada for himself,
his wife and children (if any) not exceeding five


persons in all, provided that they either accompany
him to Grenada or join him here within twelve
months of his departure for the Colony : (children
to be under 18 years of age, unmarried and
dependent on the officer).
7. Applications should be in tie candidate's
own handwriting and should state:-
(i) age ;
(ii) school or schools or University at which
education and. certificates or diplomas
obtained :
(iii) nature of present and past employment
with dates ;
(iv) amount of ionthlly salary or wages
earned in the post in which applicant was
last employed ;
(v) past expelienceff work of the same or
similar kind to that required for this
post;
(vi) certified copies of at least two testi-
monials should be forwarded.

Secretary of the Public Service Commission,
Government Office, to reach him not later than
30th April, 1!957.
9. Applicants already in the Public Service
must submit their applications through the normal
official channels.

IT is hereby notified for general information
that it is proposed to arrange a course of
training in Radiography (X-Ray Technology) at
the X-Ray Department of the Kingston Public
Hospital, which is a recognized training centre of
the Society of Radiographers, London, to com-
mence in October, 1957.
The course will extend over a mininium period
of 2 years, and is designed to pi'epare student
Radiographers for the membership examination
of the Society of Radiographers.
Applications of student radiographers who
propose to attend this course should be forwarded
through the Administrator, Grenada, for trans-
mission to the Governnment of Jamaica as early
as possible.

NOTICE.

Vacant Post Federal-Government of the West
Indies.

Federal Architect.

PPLICATIONS are invited for the post of
11 Federal Architect on the establishment of the
Federal Governmeit of the West Indies, to pro-
mote and supervise the development in Trinidad,
of the new capital of the Federation of tile 'West
Indies.
2. Appointment would be on contract for a
period of five years with salary at the rate of $12,
000 B. W. I. (2, 500) per annum.
3. Passages: Free passages, would be pro-
vided on appointment and termination of contract
(not exceeding five persons in all) for the officer,
his wife, and children who are under 18 years and
unmarried and dependent upon him.
4. Leave: Vacation leave would be granted at
the rate of 45 days per annum.
5. Leave passages: Eligible for return leave
passages, not exceeding the cost of three adults
fares to the United Kingdom after completing a
tour of not less than 2- years.
6. Quarters : If quarters are provided, a rental
of 10 per cent of basic salary would be payable for
them and, if furniture is provided, a rental of 5 per
cent of its assessed value would be payable annu-
ally. If quarters are not provided, an allowance
equal to the amount by which the the approved
rental of quarters exceeds 10 per cent of basic
salary would be payable to the officer.
7. Medical: Free medical attention would not
be provided but free operative treatment, X-Ray
examinations and bacteriological service would be
provided for the officer only.
8. The development of a new capital site will
include the preparation by nominated specialists of
a Master Plan for the site; the piomiotion of archi-
tectural competitions for the principal government
buildings; the supervision of building contracts;
and the setting up of Town Planning Control of
development in the Federal District.
9. Applicants should be qualified A-rchitects
(Associates of the Royal Ii.stitute of British Archi-
tects or other internationally recognized bodies)


with experience in physical planning and preferably
experience with either the New Towns, the
London County Council, or other public or Gov-
ernment Authorities having large development
programmes or in an office with an established and
progressive practice.
10. It is desired that the post should be filled
at an early date, in order that thei preliminary work
in connection with the Capital site can be com-
menced as early as possible after the selection of
the site in Trinidad in April, 1957.
11. Applications, giving details of age, qualifi-
cations and experience, should be submitted to the
Secretary, Public Service Commission not later
than the 'a3th April, 19-57.
They should be accompanied by the names and
addresses of two persons in the capacity of personal
referees and of two other persons in the capacity
of referees for professional experience.

r IHE public are hereby notified that due to the
L dry season a water shortage now exists in the
St. George's, St. Paul's, Morne Jaloux, Piedmon-
temps, Belmont and Grand Anse areas.
Owners of motor vehicles are therefore asked to
desist from using pipe borne water for washing
their cars, buses, etc.
The co-cperation of householders is requested
in an effort to conserve the general supply by
avoiding all waste and careless use of water for
domestic purposes in kitchens, baths etc, and com-
plete cessation of watering gardens.

NOTICE.

PPLICATIONS are invited from suitably
qualified candidates for appointment to the
post of District Medical Officer, Dominica,
particulars of which are as follows:-
Appointment: The post is pensionable but
an appointment may be made on a temporary non-
pensionable contractual basis for a period of 3 years
in the first instance. The appointment carries
with it liability to transfer to any medical post of
comparable status within the Windward Islands.
Salary: The salary is at the rate of $3,840
(300) per annum in the scale $3,840 (800) by
$120 (25) to $4,800 (1,000) per annum, plus a
pay addition of 20%.
Allowances: Travelling and subsistence
allowances are payable in accordance with local
regulations in respect of approved travel on duty.


Private Practice: Private practice will be
permitted so long as this does not interfere with
the proper performance of the officer's duties.
Quarters: Quarters are not provided. Should
Government quarters become available at any
time rental would lie charged at the rate of 10" of
salary or 50% of the assessed value of the quarters,,
whichever is less.
Passages on Appointment : Free passages
to the \Vindward Islands will be provided on first
appointment for the officer, his wife and children,.
not exceeding five persons in all. Children to be
under 18 years of age, unmarried and dependent
on the officer. In the case of a contract appoint-
nent, free passages will be provided on the
satisfactory termination of the contract.
Leave Passages" L.eave passages are pro-
vided in accordance with the Windward Islands
Leave Passage Regulations.
Duties : The ollicer will be required to perform
the usual duties of a Medical Officer, and will be
liable for service in any Institution or District of
the Colony in which he is serving. He will also
be required to attend to all patients who present
themselves at a Dispensary or Institution, tree of
personal gain to himself and in accordance with
the general directions of the Senior Medical Officer.
All fees paid for Medical attention at a Dis-
pensary or Institution will accrue to Government.

Leave : Vacation leave on full salary will be
granted in accordance with local leave regulations.
In the case of a contract appointment, vacation
leave will be granted at the rate of one week for
each completed period of three months' resident
service; such leave to be taken on the satisfactory
termination of the contract.
General: The officer will be subject to the
Colonial Regulations, local General Orders,
Financial and Store Rules and subsidiary legis-
lation in force for the time being. All Govern-
ment officials are liable to taxation imposed by
local enactments.
Applications given full particulars of candidates
qualifications and experience, and accompanied
by two testimonials, should be addressed to the
Chief Secretary. Windward Islands, Grenada, and
should reach him not later than the 30th April,

rate of $300 per annum plus an additional mileage
allowance of 12 cents per mile travelled on duty.
6. The appointee will be subject to Colonial
Regulations and local orders in force for the timi
being and to taxation at local rates.
7. Cost of passages for appointee and family (up
to a maximum of five) will he paid in the first in-
stance and on completion of contract unless person
appointed relinquishes appointment before expira-
tion of contract in which case return passages will
not be paid.
8. Leave will be granted on the satisfactory
completion of the contract on the basis of one
month f or every completed period o f twelve
months' service.

of Senior Medical Officer, St. Vincent, Windward
Islands, particulars of which are as follows :-

Appointment: The post is pensionable, but
an appointment may be made on a temporary
non-pensionable contractual basis for a period of 3
years in the first instance. The appointment
carries with it the liability to transfer to any
medical post of comparable status in the Wind-
ward Islands.
Salary: The salary of the post is at the rate
of $6,000 (1,250) per annum plus a pay addition
of 20%' of salary.
Allowances : Travelling and subsistence allow-
ance are payable in aacord-uce with local regula-
tions in respect of appro~e..c travel on duty.
Private Practice : Private practice of a con-
sultative nature only is allowed.
Quarters : Quarters are not provided. Should
Government quarters become available, the officer

such other duties connected with the health and
medical services as the Governor may from time
to time direct.

Senior Medical Officer is a member of the Central
Housing and Planning Authority and a nominated
member of the Rosean Town Council.

Leave: In dhe case of pensionable appoint-

NOTICE.

Vacant Post of Assistant Superintendent of
Prisons, Barbados.


APPLICATIONS are invited for appointment to
_ the above post.
2. Qualifications: Applicants must have re-
ceivoi their education at a recognized secondary
school and should have some administrative ex-
perience. While previous experience in prison
administration is not necessary, it will be an Lasset.
Experience in handling young persons will also be
an asset. Applicants should not be older than 40
and not younger than 25.
3. Duties: The officer will be required to
assist the Superintendent in the general ad:minis-
tration of the Prison and to undertake such
duties as may be deputed to him Irom time to
time, covering the supervision of accounts and the
direction of clerical routine. He will also be
required to organise recreational activities for
prisoners.
4. Appointment and Salary: The post is
pensionable with salary in the scale L..,_ x 144-
i4,.3'92. Salary is subject to deduction of 4 per
cent per annum under tbe Widows' and Orphans'
Pension Scheme unless the officer is already a
contributor to a Wi lows' and Orphans' Pension
Scheme of another colony.
5. Uniforms : Uniforms will be supplied free
of cost.
6. Medical Attention : The officer will receive
free medical attention for himself but not his
family.
7. Passages: Cost of passages of an officer
and his family on first appointment is payable up
to a maximum of $1.920. Passage arrangements
in respect of transferred officer will be in accordance
with Colonial Regulations 87-92.

Vacancy in the Post of Principal, Charlestown
Secondary School, Nevis, in the Colony
of St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla.

IPPLICATIONS are invited from suitably quali-
1 field persons fcr appointment to the post of
Principal, Chlarlestown Secondary Sciool, Nevis,
which is due to fall vacant at an early date.
2. The School is a Government institution with
an Academic fee-paying section which provides
tuition up to the standard of the Cambridge School
Certificate, and a Senior non fee-paying section
which provides further tuition in Primary School
subjects and training in practical subjects
e.g. domestic science, agricultural science, needle-
work, woodwork. The school is a mixed one with
a roll of approximately 190 pupils.
3. The post is pensionable and carries a salary
of $4,320 per annum. The officer appointed there-
to will be subject to the Regulations of Her
Majesty's Colonial Service and to the Laws, Gen-
eral Orders and Statutory Rules and Orders in
force in the Colony from time to time..


4. Preference will lie given to applicants possess-
ing a degree of a University within the British
Coin mon wealth, but applicants holding Inter-Arts
qualification or its equivalent, a Teacher's Diploma
and with more than slven years experience in the
administration of Senior or Modern Secondary
Schools, will be considered.
5. Experience in l Hadicraft, Dramatic Work,
Music or Art will be regarded as an asset.
G. Free passages will he provided for the officer
and also for his wife and not more than three
children under the age of eighteen years who are
unmarried and are dependent upo,n him, provided
that they accompany him or join him in the Colony
within twelve months of his appointment.
7. Vacation leave may be granted at the rate of
48 days per anrum. Leave paasages may be
granted in accordance with the terms of the General
Orders.
