Regulation 22 of the Motor Vehicles
and Road Traffic Regulations, 1938.

Vehicles and Trailers, are hereby notified that the
half-yearly inspection of these vehicles will com-
mence as follows :-

Owners of such vehicles are advised to pay
inspection fee from now onwards at their respec-
tive District Revenue Offices and then approach
the Inspector of Motor Vehicles at the Traffic
Branch New Fire Station, in advance with a view
to effecting any alterations that may be necessary
to comply with the provisions of the Motor Vehicles
and Road Traffic Ordinance, 1938, and of the
Regulations made thereunder.


Vehicles must be presented in a thoroughly
clear condition, and must have been recently
overhauled. The body and wings, axle, chassis,
frame, steering arms, springs, trackrods, brake
connections, shackles, bolts, nuts, split pins, engine,
engine shield and case, clutch, gearbox, magneto
or coil, air filter, carburettor, and all working parts
must be cleaned in order to admit of proper
examination. Dust covers, if used, must be
removed before presentation in order to admit of
an examination being made in full. All split pins,
etc., must be clearly exposed, also chassis and
engine numbers. Drivers' seats must be securely
fastened so that the driver can have proper
control over the vehicle. Spot lights, musical
horns and whistles are strictly prohibited. Each
vehicle must have its tare and maximum gross
weight painted in white figures not less than 22-
inches in height upon a black ground in a con-
spicuous place on the right or offside of the
vehicle.
The Registered Identification marks on all
vehicles must conform to provisions of Regulations
7, 8 and 9 and the Second Schedule to the Regu-
lations, No. 35 of 1938, and be in such a condition
as to render each letter or figure readily dis-
tinguishable. The attention of owners of Motor
Omnibuses and Goods Vehicles is specially
directed to regulationn 23 (11) (a) regarding the
posinon of front lamps. Spot lights will not be
allowed except with the written approved of the
Licensing Authority.
The attention of the owners of Hiring cars and
Motor Omnibuses is directed to the Motor Vehicles
and Road Traffic (Amendment) Regulations, No. 6
of 1944, as amended by the Motor Vehicles and
Road Traffic (Amendment No. 2) Regulations,
No. 70 of 1946 which require that printed copies
of the Tariffs of Maximum Fares be displayed in
such Vehicles. These are now available and may
be purchased at the Treasury, St. George's, and at
any District Revenue Office, at 4 cents per copy.
Vehicles which have been found by the Inspector
to have defects must not be used on the roads
until they have been issued with a Certificate,
certifying that the vehicles may be duly licensed.

teachers with special training in handicrafts

Vacancy in the Post of Headmaster of the
Grammar School, St. Kitts, in the Colony
of St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla.


A PPLICATIONS are invited from suitably quali-
fied persons for the post of Headmaster of
the Boys' Grammar School, St. Kitts, in the
Colony of St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla. The
school roll au present numbers about 200 and
,courses are cffered-up to the Higher School Certifi-
cate Examination of the University of Cambridge.
2. The post is pensionable and carries a salary
at the rate of $5,472 per annum.
3. Applicants should be in possession of a degree
-of a University within the British Commonwealth,


and should have considerable experience in teaching
and secondary school management.
4. The successful applicant will be required to
give an undertaking in writing to serve in the
Colony of St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla for a period of
cot less than 3 years from the date of arrival in
the Colony.
5. Free passages to the Colony will be provided
for the successful applicant and his wife and not
more than three children under the age of eighteen
years who are unmarried and are dependent upon
him, provided that they accompany him or join
him in the Colony within twelve months of his
appointment.
6. Applications stating full name, date and place
of birth, educational qualifications, teaching ex-
perience and other important activities to date,
together with a recent photograph and two testi-
monials should be addressed to the Acting Admin-
istrator, St. Kitts Nevis Anguilla, to reach him
not later than 15th January, 1957.

class families are concerned, is published for general information.

The Cost-of-Living Index for all items
following table shows the Cost-of-Living Index

Food : The average level of retail prices of those articles taken into
was the same as at 31st October, 1956, and 209% highe. than at 1939.

Rent: There has been no change recorded in tho general level of the working-class renrs.
Fuel and Cleaning: There was no change in the figure for this class during the period under
review. The increase of 161% on the 1939 prices shown in the figure for 31st Oc ober, 1956, remained
unchanged.
Clothing: Information collected from retailers indicated that at 30th November, 1956, the
average level of retail prices of clothing of the kinds generally thought by the working-Uias4 families
was 3 points lower than at 31st October, 1956, and 181% higher thin at 1939. Thi; decrease was
due to decreases in the retail prices of Men's so-ks Laiies' hais, khaki drills, cotton prints and silk
diess material and increases in the retail price of shirts, stock ,ngs ladies' shoes and white drill.
All Others : There were increases in the retail prices of Saucepans and Cutlasses and a decrease
in the retail price of cups and saucers. This resulted in an increase of 9 points on the figure for 31st
October, 1956, and 118% on the figure for 1939.
All Items: If the average changes in the cost of all the foregoing items are combined in accord-
ance with their relative importance in the 1939 working-class family expenditure, the resultant general
average increase at 30th November, 1956, was 1 point highe- than at 31st October, 1956, and 194%.
