... 193%

Food: The average level of retail prices of those articles ti ken into accolun in the food group
was 6 points lower than at 30th September, 1956, and 209% hig-e- than at 1939. This decrease was
due to a decrease in the retail prices of ground provisions and an incre ise in the retail price of
cereals.
Rent: There has been no change recorded in the general Level of the working-class rents.
Fuel and Cleaning : There was no change in the figure for this class during the period under
review. The increase of 161% on the 1939 prices shown in the figure for 30th September, 1956, remained
unchanged.
Clothing: Information collected from retailers indicated that at 31st October, 1956, the
average level of retail prices of clothing of the kinds generally bontiho by the working-class families
was 1 point. lower than at 30th September, 1956, and 181% higher thn at 1939. This decrease was
due to a decrease in the retail prices of Zephyr, which was more than proportionate to the small
increase in the retail price of ladies' vests.
All Others : There were increases in the retail prices of Saucepans, Frying Pans, Agricultural
Forks, and in the subscription to Benefit Societies. This resulted in an increase of 11.4 points on the
figure for 30th September, 1956, and 109% on the figure for 1939.
All Items : If the average changes in the cost of all the foregoing items are combined in accord-
ance with their relative importance in the 1939 working-class family expenditure, the r sultanr general
average increase at 31st October, 1956, was the same as at 30th September, 1956, and 193%0 higher
than at 1939.
