DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE


Cocoa Industry Improvement Scheme


Distribution of Rooted Cuttings of Selected
Strain of Grenada Cocoa for Planting
in 1955.



T is estimated that there will be rooted cocoa
cuttings at the cocoa propagation station
available to plant 400 acres in 1955.
2. Persons desirous of obtaining rooted cocoa
cuttings from the cocoa stations should apply on
the forms provided for that purpose, entitled:
"Application Form for Bootea Cocoa Cuttings
Propagated for Distribution by the Cocoa Industry
Improvement Scheme of Grenada."
3. Application forms should be forwarded to the
Agricultural Officer (Cocoa), Mt. Horne Cocoa
Station, St. Andrew's on or before the 31st May,
1954.
4. Applications for rooted cocoa cuttings received
after the 81st May, 1954 will neither be acknowledged
*ir considered.
5. Application forms are available at the Depart-
ment of Agriculture, all Agricultural and Cocoa
Stations and District Revenue Offices. Application
forms can also be obtained from all members of the'
extension staff of the Department of Agriculture.
6. Rooted Cocoa Cuttings are delivered free of
charge to the applicants at a point, as near as
possible to the site at which they are to be planted
accessible at the time to the motor vehicle convey-
ing the plants.
7. The conditions under which rooted cocoa
cuttings will be issued are as follows:-
(i) The area selected by an applicant will be
inspected by an authorised officer, as soon
as possible after the receipt of the applica-
tion, for the purpose of determining the
suitability of the site in regard to altitude,
soil type, wind protection and other
ecological and environmental conditions.
The applicant will then be notified whether
or not the area is approved for planting.
(ii) If for stated reasons the area is declared to
be unsuitable for planting cocoa clones,, no
allocation of plants will be made to the
applicant.
(iii) If the area is declared suitable, an authorised
officer will inform the applicant what
minimum. action is required of him by the
Department of Agriculture, in regard to
provision of ground shade, windreaks, soil
conservation measures,, soil preparation etc.
The Agricultural Department will render all
assistance, guidance and advice in this
connection.
(iv) The minimum area for which plants will be
issued will be that which will contain fifty
(50) rooted cuttings planted at a spacing of
10 ft by 10 ft. in a single block, the equiva-
lent of one-eighth (Q) of an acre.


(v) The area to be planted will be re-inspected
by an authorised officer immediately before
the proposed date of delivery of the plants,
for the purpose of ascertaining whether all
conditions have been satisfactorily fulfilled,
and whether the area is in a suitable state
of preparation for planting.
(vi) Authorised officers of the Department of
Agriculture, will make periodic inspections
of the replanted areas, as often as may be
considered necessary, for the purpose of
observing field conditions, the development
of the young plants and advising the grower
on the care and management of the young
plants.
8. Applicants ate advised to take advantage of
the experience already gained in replanting methods
at the Cocoa Stations and other plots, where re-
planting with rooted cocoa cuttings have already
been undertaken during the last 4 to 6 years.
Applicants are accordingly invited to visit the
Cocoa Stations and to make the fullest possible use
of all information that is available.

Concord aforesaid known as "Cannes Bigue"
containing about 1 Acre and abutted and bounded
on one side by Dividal Estate on another side by
land of Neville Thomas, on another side by land of
Felix Antoine and on the remaining side by land of
Louise Antoine.
