OTICE is hereby given that the assessment
Lists for Water Rates for the year 1953, as
finally determined, may be seen at the Treasury,
St. George's, and at the respective District Revenue
Offices, between the 1st day of May and the 31st
day of July, 1953 and that attendance will be
given during that period for the purpose of receiv-
ing the rates fixed by the several District Boards.

General Certificate of Education.

IONDON University is prepared to allow the
SGeneral Certificate of Education Examination
to be held overseas in the Autumn of this year.
Entries for this examination must be received
by the Local Secretary not later than 31st July,
1958. No entries will be received after that date.

SYacant Post of Chief Sanitary
Inspector.

APPLICATIONS are invited for filling the post
of Chief Sanitary Inspector, Grenada. The
post is pensionable and carries salary in the scale
$1,920 x $96-$2,400 plus a temporary cost of
living allowance at the rate of 20% of salary. The
officer will be required to keep a car for the
performance of his duties for which a travelling
allowance of $960 per annum is payable.
The officer will be required to supervise the
work of the Sanitation Department and will be
responsible to the Senior Medical Officer.
Applications stating age, qualifications and
experience must be addressed to the Secretary
Public Service Commission, Government Office,
Grenada, and must reach him not later than 15th
June, 1953.

NOTICE TO MARINERS:

ARINERS are warned that mooring buoys,
marker buoys and sinkers have been estab-
lished within a radius of 750 feet to the west and
north of the new west beacon in Scarborough
harbour. This beacon is in Lat. 11 10 52"
North, Long. .600 43' 40" West, and carries a
flashing red light.
The area under reference is to be regarded as
dangerous to navigation and mariners are warned
accordingly.

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE

Cocoa Industry Improvement Scheme


Distribution of Rooted Cuttings of Selected
Strains of Grenada Cocoa for planting in
1954.

IT is estimated that there will be rooted cocoa
cuttings at the cocoa propagation stations
available to plant 300 acres in 1954.
2. Persons desirous of obtaining rooted cocoa
cuttings from the cocoa stations, should apply on
the forms provided for that purpose, entitled:
"Application Form for Booted Cocoa Cuttings
Propagated for Distribution by the Cocoa Industry
Improvement Scheme of Grenada".
3. Application forms should be forwarded to the
Agricultural Officer (Cocoa), Boulogne Cocoa
Nurseries, St. Andrew's on or before the 30th June,
1953.
4. Applications for rooted cocoa cuttings received
after the 30th Tune, 1958 will neither be acknow-
ledged nor considered.
5. Application forms are available at the Depart.
ment of Agriculture, all Agricultural and Cocoa
Stations and District Revenue Offices. Application
forms can also be obtained from all members of
the extension staff of the Department of Agricul-
ture.
6. Rooted Cocoa Cuttings are delivered free of
charge to the applicants at a point, as near as
possible to the site at which they are to be planted,
accessible at the time to the motor vehicle con-
veying the plants.
7. The conditions under which rooted cocoa cut-
tings will be issued are as follows:-
(i) The area selected by an applicant will be
inspected by an authorised officer, as soon
as possible after the receipt of the applica-
tion, for the purpose of determining the
suitability of the site in regard to altitude,
soil type. wind protection and other ecologi-
cal and environmental conditions. The
applicant will then be notified whether or
not the area is approved for planting.

(ii) If for stated reasons the area is declared to
be unsuitable for planting cocoa clones, no
allocation of plants will be made to the
applicant.
(iii) If the area is declared suitable, an authoris-
ed officer will inform the applicant what
minimum action is required of him by the
Department of Agriculture, in regard to
provision of ground shade, windbreaks, soil
conservation measures. soil preparation etc.
The Agricultural Department will render all
assistance, guidance and advice in this
connection.
(iv) The minimum area for which plants will be
issued will be that which will contain fifty
(50) rooted cuttings planted at a spacing
of 10 ft. by 10 ft. in a single block, the
Equivalent of one-eighth () of an acre.
fv) The area to be planted will be re-inspected
by an authorised officer immediately before
the proposed date of delivery of the plants,
for the purpose of ascertaining whether all
conditions have been satisfactorily fulfilled,
and whether the area is in a suitable state
of preparation for planting.
(vi) Authorised officers of the Department of
Agriculture, will make periodic inspections
of the replanted areas, as often as may be
considered necessary, for the purpose of
observing field conditions, the development
of the young plants and advising the grower
on the care and management of the young
plants,
8. Applicants are advised to take advantage of
-the experience already gained in replanting methods
at the Cocoa Stations and other plots, where re-
planting with rooted cocoa cuttings have already
been undertaken during the last 4 to 6 years.
Applicants are accordingly invited to visit the
'Cocoa Stations and to make the- fllest possible use
-of all information that is available.

University College of the West Indies.



APPLICATIONS are invited for the Post of
Staff Tutor in Industrial Relations in the
Department of Extra-Mural Studies.
Salary 1,200 up to 1,350 per annum, accord-
ing to qualifications and experience; appointment
for three years; pension contribution and passages
for person appointed and wife and children up to
total number of five persons in all, paid to the
-colony and to country of origin cn completion of
contract. Practical experience of British Trade
.Union organisation and educational work ac advan-
tage. Work requires travel throughout British
'Caribbean for which cost of travel and subsistence
allowances are paid.

University College of the West Indies.

A PPLICATIONS are invited for the Post of
Resident Tutor in the Department of Extra-
Mural Studies. The Tutor may be required to
serve in any of the British Colonies in the Carib-
bean.
Salary 750 x 50 x 900 x 50 x 1,100 per annum;
point of entry according to qualifications and
experience. Child allowance and house allowance
are paid. superannuation under F.S.S.U. arrange-
ments.

Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedics. The duties
of the post will include clinical work in the
University College Hospital and instruction of
students working for the medical degree of the
University of London. The consolidated salary
scale is 1,300 x 50 1,800. The point of entry
in the scale in determined by qualifications and
experience. Child allowance is paid. Superan-
nuation is available is under F.S.S.U. arrangements.
Unfurnished accommodation is available at a rent
of 5% of basic salary. The successful applicant
should take up the post by the 1st October, 1953.

be received before 30th June 1963, by the Secretary,
Senate Committee on Higher Education in the
Colonies, Senate House, University of London,
London, W.C.I., from whom further particulars
may be obtained.


Government of Dominica.

PPLICATIONS are invited for the post of
Colonial Accountant, Dominica. The duties
of the post, which is on the permanent and
pensionable establishment, will involve generally
assistance to the Financial Secretary in all aspects
of Treasury work. The person selected will be
required to deputise for the Financial Secretary as
need arises.
2. Applicants should have recognized qualifica-
tions and experience in accountancy.
3. Salary offered is in the Ecale $2,400 x $120-
$2,880 a year with cost of living allowance at the
rate of 20% of salary. It is expected that this
rate of salary will shortly be revised to conform
with the recommendations for similar posts of the
Salaries Revision Commissioner of the Windward
Islands.
4. Applications should reach the Establishment
Officer, Government Office, Dominici, nct later
than June 13, 1953. Applications from persons
in Government service should be submitted through
the Officer administering the Government of that
Colony.
