APPOINTMENT TO WHITLEY COUNCIL
His EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL has appointed MR. W. A. GRINSTED, Director of The West Indies
Meteorological Service, to be a member of the Official Side of the Whitley Council of the Federal Public
Service with effect from the 28th November, 1959.

ACTING APPOINTMENT IN THE FEDERAL PUBLIC SERVICE
WITH reference to Notice No. 97 published in The West Indies Gazette of 28th August, 1959, MAJOR H. R.
DANIEL, E.D., Assistant Secretary, has been appointed to act, with effect from the 20th of November, 1959,
inclusive, and until further notice, as Senior Assistant Secretary, Secretariat, during the continuation of
Mr. F. A. Phillips' special assignment on duties arising from the inter-governmental Conference on the Federal
Constitution and related matters.

PROMOTION IN THE FEDERAL PUBLIC SERVICE
THE FEDERAL SECRETARY, acting under the powers conferred on him by the Appointments in the Public Service
(Delegation) Regulations, 1958, and, after consultation with the temporary Federal Public Service Commis-
sion, has been pleased to promote Miss E. Cox from Secretary-Stenographer to Reporter (Palantypist), Federal
Legislature, with effect from the 1st September, 1959.

appointed Miss S. B. WILLIAMS as Reporter (Palantypist), Federal Legislature, with effect from the 1st of
September, 1959.

THE WEST INDIES :

THE DEFENCE (AMENDMENT) BILL

OBJECTS AND REASONS

This Bill seeks to amend the Defence Act, 1958
(Cap. 101) in order to provide authority for the making of
regulations under the Act with respect to the payment of
pensions and gratuities to the dependants of officers and
soldiers of the West India Regiment on the death of such
officers and soldiers.

THE DEFENCE (AMENDMENT) BILL

A Bill intituled

An Act to amend the Defence Act, 1958.

Be it enacted by the Queen's Most Excellent
Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate
and the House of Representatives of the West Indies, and
by the authority of the same, as follows:-
Short title. 1. This Act may be cited as the Defence (Amend-
ment) Act, 1959, and shall be read as one with the Defence
cap. 101. Act, 1958, hereinafter referred to as the principal Act.

ofmen ent 2. Paragraph (f) of subsection (1) of section 221 of
221 of the the principal Act is hereby amended by the insertion
Arncipal immediately after the word "soldiers" therein of the
following words:-

"and of their dependants surviving them".
