His Excellency the Governor-General has been pleased to appoint MR. M. S. STAVELEY, M.B.E., to act as
Secretary to the Governor-General with effect from the 3rd January, 1958.

TO ALL TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME
WHEREAS by paragraph (1) of article 74 of the Constitution of The West Indies it is provided that the first
Chief Justice of The West Indies shall be appointed by the Governor-General in accordance with such instruc-
tions as may be given to him by Her Majesty through a Secretary of State:
And Whereas the Governor-General has received instructions through one of Her Majesty's Principal
Secretaries of State to appoint SIR ERIC HALLINAN, Knight Bachelor, to be the first Chief Justice of The
KNOW THEREFORE BY THESE PRESENTS that I do hereby appoint SIR ERIC HALLINAN, Knight Bachelor, to
be Chief Justice of The West Indies as from the third day of January, 1958, to have and exercise all the
functions and authority appertaining to that office, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of
The West Indies.
In Witness Whereof I have caused these letters to be made patent and have caused to be affixed thereto
the public seal of The West Indies.
Given at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, this third day of January, 1958,
in the Sixth Year of Her Majesty's Reign.
