No. 2.

Notices.

THE COLLEGE OF AIR TRAIN-
ING HAMBLE: SOUTHAMPTON.
Following from Head of Students
Branch, Colonial Office, is published
for general information.
Until 1960 the Services supplied most
of the trained pilots for the civil air-
lines but with the end of National
Service the College of Air Trainng has
been established at Hamble for the
purpose of training boys leaving
school as airline pilots in order to
meet the requirements of B.O.A.U.
and B.E.A. It is also the aim of
the college, which is sponsored by
Her Majesty's Government, to train
pilots for the British Independent
airlines and the Commonwealth and
Colonial airlines.
The course lasts two years and
after a careful analysis of the
operating costs the Board of Gov-
ernors has d cided that the cost of
training a cndet from overseas will
amount to 8,250. This covers two
years flying and ground training and
includes the sum of 675 for tuition
fees, board and lodging, uniform,
books, publications and stationery
etc. The figure does not include
pocket money, travelling to and from
the college or the cost of residence at
the college during leave periods
which amount to seven weeks per
year.
The college is prepared to consider
suitably qualified candidates for the
course commencing in September,
1961, or subsequent years. It is
important to note that candidates will
have to come to the United Kingdom
to undergo selection tests at the
examination centre, which will
normally be at the College and
involve residence for up to five days.
In view of this requirement pros-
pective candidates should receive a
thorough medical examination before
they leave for the United Kingdom
so that they stand a good chance of
being accepted.
Applications should be addressed
direct to the college.
