UNIVERSITY GALLERY
UG 23- OCT 7, 20
OPENING RECEPTION
FRI, AUG 26, 7-9 PI
ALK BY ARNOLD MESCHES
"RI, SEP 9, 3 PM

The University Gallery opens its fall, 2005 season with the
internationally acclaimed exhibition, "THE FBI FILES,"
PAINTINGS/COLLAGES by ARNOLD MESCHES. Mesches' work is informed by his sensitivity
to humanity and society. It is representational and
expressionistic, addressing issues of democracy, freedom,
and civil rights. During the mid 1940's, Mesches discovered
that he was being "shadowed" by special informants
working for the F.B.I. In 1999, through the Freedom of
Information Act, the artist gained access to his 760-page
FBI file. The reports contained major areas of blacked out
words and sections.

"The FBI Files," contains an extensive collection of collages
made from copies of the actual pages from Mesches' files,
along with eight large acrylic paintings on canvas.
Arnold Mesches' work, while lull of significant narrative
content, is as always, painterly, aesthetically compelling,
rich in color and form, and graphically poignant. "The FBI
Files" has traveled widely throughout the United States.
The documentary film, "A Conversation with Arnold
Mesches," about the exhibition and life experiences of the
artist, produced by the Artists Network, New York City,
is also included in the University Gallery exhibition.

On behalf of the College of Fine Arts I would like to
express our great appreciation to our University of Florida
partners, and to Arnold Mesches for working with the
Gallery on programming associated with this exhibition.
