Spanish Lessons

Intended Grade: Varies; beginning to advanced Spanish

Subject Areas: Spanish I through AP Spanish (Spanish V)

Ob ective:
The students will be able to apply the historical background studied in class to
express themselves correctly in Spanish using correct present tense conjugation in
Level 1, "para" and "por" in Levels 3 and 4 and advanced vocabulary in Spanish IV
and AP.

Time: Introduction to the historical background will take approximately a week and a
half. Exercises are geared to specific levels.

Materials:
Handouts are provided; chalkboard, and transparencies.

Instructions:
For each level develop and present appropriate historical background on 16th
century Florida using the resources at www.flahum.org/colonial.
For Spanish I introduce appropriate vocabulary giving particular emphasis to
the present tense verb conjugation. As an evaluating tool have the students
complete the worksheet on conjugating verbs in the present tense.
For Spanish III and IV discuss the historical background in greater detail.
Have students study the timeline or read the biographies of Menendez, de
Soto, and Ponce de Le6n? Emphasis will be given to a discussion in the
target language (Spanish). For additional reading use Sabias que....?
The culminating activities for Spanish III will be an exercise using "para" and
"por" and a word search with the vocabulary studied previously.
In level IV, AP (or level V) the students will use a series of historical pictures
of the Florida Indians and match the pictures with a written description.
In addition they will describe in their own words a final picture in the target
language and can solve the word jumble made with www.puzzlemaker.com
