A FIGHT H WITH A WHALE.

Lord Archibald Campbell sends to the Edin-
burgSh Sicoltsmia the following account of ia lIatle,
otf which he was a witness, between a thra-.h-r,
s'worrl-fish aud a whale off' E,:lc-leisle, on Sep". 7.
His Lordship, who was a passeng.r (in brait(d tie
Pei uvian, writes: When fairly oulsidle ollelisle
island, with icebergs of no great size on eilinhr bow
nnd fairly in the Arclic current, and the Toutonia
on our starboard bow, the first officer tolhl me he
had feen twice a large thrasher' finh leap c-lean ,rut
of the water not fir from our bows. W\e k:lit a
close watch near about where he had last Eeen the
fish ;- nor had we long to wait. anil for the next ]D1
minutes to a quarter of an honr we watched a mnst
tremendous tight between this fish and] a large
whale which, evidently attacked also from below lby
a sword.fisb, was ineffectually trying to 'sound'
and do all in its mighty power to get away, but
there was no escape. The thrasher, an enormous
fish-reckoned by the first officer and head engineer
at 80 feet in length-kept continually lashing the
whale with its powerful tail, and, as if not satisfied
lhat, these stunning blows hall told, threw itself
in the air with enormous leaps, landing on the
whale with the most resounding *whacks.' The
sublime and the ludicrous were strangely blended
in these attacks- The pass-'nges and crew were
all gathered at. the bulwarks, fascinated by the oi-
gantic fight. Thpe hale Inrned in its agony al-
most belly uppermost, eating itself about in ;ll
direction, but there waus no escape. It never got
deip beliw the surface, w' li was churned by its
mighty efforts into a seeth!.g mass of foam. The
combatants went right ii, the teeth of the wind and
sea lth.n running. We saw the whale in a regular
flurry often, and when our straining eyes last saw
them they were as hard at it as ever, and it. was
the opinion of most on board that the whale wais
last sickening. The whole of the under part of the
whale was white, and I hope some one will give
me sonma information as to its species. From the
tips of the tail to lite ?jaw it was as il painted pure
while, a leaden color above. There were many
on boaid who had sailed thle Atlantic h>r upward
ctf :3, years, but. hal nevi r seen such a light. It
Iook place, so to speak, close to Iboth vess-, the
fight raging between our ship and the Teutnia."

REPORTED FINDING OF A DIAMOND.

From, the .Jo.t'wtz (X1.'i Br,'nl'hck) Times.
Mr. Jaddus Gogaien, of Kent County, and Mr.
Michael \V. Coughliu, of Newcastle, New Bruns-
wick, left Monclon by express north, en route to
limouski, to lake Ihe steamer for England, prin-
cipally to dispose of a diamond, or a supposed dia-
mondl, which wi's found by Mr. Coughlin afier the
last October gale among Ihe stones at ahe ballast
whiart, Newcastle. 'The sIppohition is that it
was brought out from the East Indies in ballas.t.
The pl ize is oval shaped, weighs '. cara-ts, iihas ap-
parently very little outer cru4t, and is colorlei.z nmt
being distinguishal.le from water. It is quite

transparent, and if it is a diamond of good quality
is very valuable. It is said the were olered .$500
for the article in the North, but refused. The ar-
rangement by which Mr. Gogaien became half
owner in this "shiner" is to the effect that he pays
the expenses connected with the (rip to Engla.ind
by which it is expected to effect, a sale. Mr. Go-
galen also takes with him about 100 pearls, gath-
ered in the north from oysters and black clams,
the latter, when found in waters used for stream
driving, often containing pearls which finl a ready
sale at a high price. A few IA the.-:e are quite,.
large and should be worth oonsiderabLle,

STE.0M-BOATS IN VENICE.

From the Londuin Figaro.
Among the few existing relies of media-valism
-which we imagined would continue to survive the
attack of the practical and go-a-head lendr-neies
of the age, we certainly reckoned the gondola. It
is difficult, in fact, to imagine Venice wiLhout this
peculiar characteristic, so suggestive ol the itimance
of its past history, and yet there can be little doubt
as to what will be the result of the competition
which it will be shortly called on to enter into with
the new steam-boats which wec see are to invade the
laoorins of the Adiiatic. Travelers will, of course,
lament the change, and talk bitterly about the
vandalism of ihbe age; but they will all the same
take the steam-boats as soon as they are put on,
and leave the few leaky gondolas that may still
ply to the undisturbed patronage of travelling
wthet(rs. The company that is about to supply
Venice with steamers will model its vessels upon
those ofourown river, we understand, and it is quite
possible that the fares charged to passengers also
may imitate the che,.pness of our Lpenny boats."
And with penny boats" on the water-ways of Ve-
nice we think the climax of mode in utilitariinisru
may be lairly cousideted to have been reached.
''hey are a fitting supplement, iu fact, to the rail-
wa;y up Vesuvius, and the steama- lauches ol theI
Nilc.
