in the latter, by which th-e present unsightly build-
ings will he swept away anid thie ground planted
and beautified. The State Commissioners propose
to appropriate a strip of land along the Ameri an
shore from Port Day at the head of the rapids to
the upper suspension bridge, and this would give a
belt of public land a mile long, and widening from
100 feet at the head of the 'apids to 00 ft. at the.
Falls, whore most room is required for visitors. Bath
Island and Goat Island would also be taken pos-
session of by the State, and by setting out planta-
tions of quick-growing trees, the landscape of the
rapids would in a few years he wonderfully altered
for the better. It is to be hoped that. the Canadian
Government will also see its way to co-operate
with the Unite.d Statea authorities, oud thue ensure
an harmoniously improvement on both sides of the
river. The report contniria an interesting map of
the stream. showing the rcceesion of the Faill. ficmn
1842 to 1175. Few persons ar:' aware of the great,
geological changes here going on, the Falls having
receded no less than '5 ft. in "3 years, while the
centre of the Horseshoe catE.ract han gone back
about 160 feet in the same peie d. Probably ito
is no other locniity wxhare the rate o! geological
waste is so rapid.

A VERY CuaioUS INDUBTRY.-T'e white wax of
Sze-chaen, China, is most peculiar in its growth.
Baron Richlhofen estimates the value of tbo annrmd
crop, on the average, at about 650n,000. In 1&;79
upwards of 81,000 worth of this curious onrtomo-
logical secretion was exported from the one port of
Hankow alone. White wax is the mere exudation
of an insect in a state of disease, aggravated pro-
bably by the operation of an uncoungenial climate,
and favoured by the presence of a tree for which
the creature has an affinity. In the Keenchang
district an evergreen, known as the ligistrunm lactidumn
thrives in abundance, and on its twigs in the
spring of the year countless flies swarm like a
brown film. The branches soon become covered
with a white, soapy incrustation that Increases in
volume until the commencement of the fall of the
year, when the sprays are cut off and immersed in
water, which is kept boiling. The viscid substance
rises to the surface, and i surface, and is skimmed off, melted,
and allowed to cool in deep pans. It was acciden-
tally discovered that, by transporting the insects
from their native district to the more vigorous one
of Keating Fu, in the north of the province, their
capability of discharging wax was largely aug-
mented, a property which was promptly and exten.
elvely availed of by the Sze-chuen traders. The
period between morning and evening Is chosen for
conveyance, because many hours of sunlight would
precipitate the hatching. This should Lake place
only after the females have been attached to the
trees. Arrived at their destination, six or more of
the mothers-which are enormously prolific-are
tied, wrapped in a palm leaf, to a member of the
ligu strum. A few days later the young flie as e
swarming on the twigs, where they fulfill their
mission by the month of August, Then they per-
ish in the caldrons, where the results of their brief
existence are collected. It is said that this pecu-
liar industry requires the exercise of great care,
forethought, and experience.

Gowrnment Relief of Irish Distress.-At a meeting
of the Irish members of Parliament on Tuesday it

grant for the relief of Irish distress and to charge a
uniform rate of one per cent interest, and also that
60,000, instead of 30,000, be voted for the con-
struction of fishery piers. If the amendments are
rejected in Parliament Mr. Parnell will move that
the bill for the relief of distress be referred to a
special committee of Irish members under the
chairmanship of Right Hon. William E. Forster,
Chief Secretary for reland.
