PEACH AND NECTARINE VARIETIES AND ADVANCED SELECTIONS
AT MONTICELLO, FLORIDA, IN 1970.

by H. W. Young, Associate Horticulturist and Head

This is a report on peach and nectarine varieties and advanced selections
at Monticello in 1970.

Yields The 1970 records (as summarized in Table 1) were taken on fruit
that were considered nearly ripe. They would have been harvested at least two
days earlier if picked for distant shipment. The age of tree is listed in the
table as the number of years the tree has been in the orchard and includes 1970.
For example, a tree planted in February 1964 is listed as 7 years of age.

Fruit Characteristics At each harvest ten average-sized sound fruit
were measured and these measurements were averaged at the end of the season for
each tree and variety.

Chilling Hours The number of hours at or below 45 degrees F after
October 1, 1970, in the winter of 1969-70 were; 725 before January 15; 862
before January 31; 1008 before February 15; and 1100 before February 28.

Late Spring Freezes Temperatures in March that affected fruit set
were 310 F on March 15 and 290F on March 16.

Fruit Thinning Fruit was thinned to at least four inches apart on
individual branches.

Fertilization Approximately 700 pounds per acre of 5-3-21 fertilizer
was broadcast in the spring of 1970.

Pest Spray Program Recommendations as published by the Big Bend Hort.
Lab. were used.
