TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF CHILL HOUR
DATA FOR AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTER, MONTICELLO
(1949-50 THROUGH 1973-74)

W. J. French and T. T. Alderman(1)

In selecting peach varieties for north Florida, primary
consideration should be given to chilling requirements of
the varieties. Chilling is computed by summing the hours
below 450F for the period from November 1 through February 15.
The amount of chilling varies considerably from year to year
and from section to section. Sharpe and Arnold(2) recommend
that varieties be chosen which receive their chilling re-
quirement in at least 75% of the winters. Detailed records
of accumulated chill hours for various locatons in Peninsular
Florida(3) and North and Northwest FloridaU4 are available.
This paper presents an updated summary of accumulated chill
hours as recorded at the Agricultural Research Center in
Monticello.
