CABBAGE STRAIN TRIALS AT HASTINGS, FLORIDA 1968-69
J. R. Shumaker, Asst. Horticulturist

METHODS:

Cabbage strains (varieties and experimental lines) were tested for desirable hor-
ticultural characteristic ih both replicated and observational plantings. Seed
of each strain was soak Octobe llth, ard plants iere transplanted November 25th.
Recommended cultural and insect and disease control practices were followed dur-
ing the growing season. Harvesting began on February 18th and was conducted as
maturity demanded until conclusion on March 28th. First harvest of each strain
was delayed until one or two heads burst or split.

Maturity and yield results of both trials are summarized in Tables 1 and 2. Hor-
ticultural characteristics for each strain in the replicated trials are summarized
in Table 3. Either a description or a rating of 0 to 5 was used in evaluating
each character. A rating of 5 was most desirable. Mechanical harvester adapt-
ability ratings were derived by averaging the following: (1) percentage of total
yield at first harvest; (2) uniformity of head shape and size; and (3) plant type
as related to harvester requirements.

RESULTS:

Replicated Trial--For comparison the most po ar varieties grown Hastings are
King Cole, Market Topper, and Market Priz In addition .I these, several other
varieties demonstrated a high degree of f sh mar ~Paatility t the area.
They are recommended for trial in commercial plantings and are as follows:

Early maturity (85 to 92 days) o .S-1IVh O

Rounded to semi-round heads
Kleen Cut, Harvester Queen, Pack Rite, and Head Start

Medium to medium-late maturity (115 days)

Rounded to semi-round heads
Superette, Green Boy, and Little Rock
Semi-flat to flattened heads
Hybrid 21, Saf-Gard, and Rio Verde

Mechanical harvester adaptability ratings ranged from 1.9 to 4.6 (Table 3). Best
rating was obtained from Harvester Queen, and the poorest rating from Marion
Market.

Observational Trial--Thirty-three strains were lined out in individual observa-
tional plots (Table 2). Market Topper check plots were arranged so that each
strain on trial was either flanked or only a row removed from the check. Strain
showing particularly good promise to this area will be further evaluated during
the 1969-70 season for fresh market adaptability.
