Control of Insect Pests of Cabbage and Potatoes in the Hastings Area

Precautions

Insecticides are poisons. Some are more violent than others, but all are dan-

gerous to human life. Even rotenone, if introduced directly into the blood stream,

is toxic to man. It is necessary, therefore, that people who handle insecticides

and the consumers of produce treated with insecticides be properly protected. Any-

one handling insecticides should follow the safety precautions printed on the labels

of insecticide containers. For the protection of consumers, growers should observe

the precautions given here regarding last applications prior to harvest.

Parathion and TEPP are good insecticides but they are highly dangerous to man

when used carelessly. They can, however, be handled safely, as demonstrated by the

thousands of people who have applied numerous tons of these poisons without any

accidents. For your own protection, read carefully and observe all safety pre-

cautions printed on the labels of parathion and TEPP containers.


Cabbage. Cauliflower and Broccoli

Early control measures against insect pests of cabbage and related crops give

better results than control applied after infestations have passed the incipient

stage. That is especially true in regard to aphids. Treat cabbage for aphis con-

trol when few aphids can be found, and continue this policy throughout the season,

The waxy nature of cabbage foliage creates special problems in applications of

sprays. Generally speaking, dusting cabbage may be more effective than spraying.

But spraying can also be highly effective when properly done. If you spray, be

sure to add a good wetting agent, such as Triton B1956. This preparation is used

at the rate of 2 ozs. per 100 gallons of spray.









While a single insecticide can not be recommended for the control of all cab-

bage insects, a good mixture for general-purpose treatments is parathion and DDT.

These can be mixed in the tank as emulsions or wettable powders, or they can be

purchased as ready-mixed dusts. If planning to use wettable powders, make sure the

nozzles of your spraying machine will not clog. The emulsion sprays are mixed as

follows: one pint of 25% parathion emulsion, 1 quart of 25% DDT emulsion, 2 ozs.

Triton B1956, in 100 gallons of water, Apply 100 gallons per acre. The dust mix-

ture contains 2% parathion and 5% DDT. Apply about 20-25 lbs. per acre.

In the table which follows, the common insect pests of cabbage and related

crops in the Hastings area are arranged alphabetically. When some insect creates a

special problem and requires individual attention, this table may be consulted for

guidance.

Control Potato Insects

In the program of potato disease and insect control in the Hastings area,

sprays have been adopted by growers as generally more satisfactory than dusts. In

the table which follows, therefore, the emphasis is on sprays.

If a grower is equipped only with dusting facilities, he can control the in-

sect pests feeding on the potato plants above ground by using a dust mixture con-

taining 2% parathion and 5% DDT. DDT dust alone does not control aphids.
