Varieties.- Well-adapted, high-yielding varieties with good eating and shipping
qualities are necessary to produce profitable crops of cabbage, cauliflower and
potatoes at Hastings. Variety trials at the Potato Investigations Laboratory-
have shown that some varieties of these crops are much better in these respet-s
th-aan others. Varieties recommended for use in the area are:

Fertilization of Cabbage and Cauliflower.- Eighteen hundred to 2,000 pounds of
fertilizer per acre are needed to grow good crops of cabbage and cauliflower and
it should supply the three major plant foods; Nitrogen (N) phosphoric acid (P205),
and potassium (K20). About 2 percent of magnesium (MgO) is generally used in the
fertilizer for these crops at Hastings. Fertilizer formulas most generally used
in the area are 6-8-8 and 5-7-5. Less fertilizer is needed in plant beds than is
required to grow crops in the field. The soil should be sampled in the early fall.
If the pH is 5.0 or below, the soil should be limed to adjust the reaction to pH
5.5 to 5.8 to prevent development of whiptail in cauliflower, help prevent leaching
of plant nutrients and help make the plant nutrients in the soil and fertilizer more
available to cabbage and cauliflower.

For plant beds, apply the fertilizer with a potato planter in a band in both
sides of the row at rates of 1,000 to 1,200 pounds per acre just before planting
the seed. TWhen heavy rains occur the fertilizer may be leached deeply into the
soil and the seedling plants will show a light green to yellow color. In this case,
sidedress the plants with 50 to 75 pounds per acre of nitrate of soda, nitrate of
soda-potash or ammonium nitrate. Sidedressing may be repeated one or more times
as needed to keep the plants green and growing.

For fields of transplanted cabbage and cauliflower apply the fertilizer at
rates of 1,800 to 2,000 pounds per acre in a band on each side of the row just
before the plants are transplanted. The fertilizer, however, may be placed in sides
of the row 1 to 2 weeks after the plants are transplanted. If the fertilizer is
applied after the plants are set, apply it with a tractor-mounted fertilizer
distributor 3 to 4 inches deep in the row and about 3 inches away from the plants
in both sides of the row. Do not delay fertilizations of the plants more than 3
weeks as they may become stunted.

Sidedress cabbage and cauliflower 2 or more times during the growing season
i;ith nitrate of soda, nitrate of soda-potash or ammonium nitrate, supplying 24
pounds of nitrogen per acre per application. The first sidedressing is usually
applied 2 to 3 weeks after the plants are set. The second sidedressing is apprLed
30 days after the first one unless leaching rains occur and the plants show a light
-r:11 or yellow color. In which case the second sidedressing may be applied earlier.
- '.ti:onal sidedressings may be needed if rains leach plant nutrients from the soil.
When sidedressing large plants apply it on sides of the row below plant leaves to
prevent burning.

Seeding and Fertilization of Potatoes.- Tests have shown that two-ounce seed-
pieces of the Sebago variety produce best yields of potatoes at Hastings. Space
seedpieces 10 or 8 inches apart in the row. For 40-inch rows this will require
2,000 pounds of seed at the 10-inch spacing and 2,450 pounds of seed at the 8-inch
spacing to plant an acre of potatoes. When planting 2,000 pounds of seed apply
2,200 pounds of 6-8-8 fertilizer or equivalent per acre. For 2,450 pounds of seed
apply 2,500 to 2,750 pounds of fertilizer per acre. Average yields of 200 cwt.
USIA potatoes per acre and a minimum price of $3.00 per cwt. will make the higher
rates of seeding and fertilization profitable. For larger yields and higher prices
the higher rates of seedling and fertilization will be proportionately more profit-
