New York. Oct. I -The rst pub-
lic good reads automobile tour be-
tween the North and South started
yesterday from Herald Square and
wil end In Atlanta on Nov. 3, shortly
before the opening of an automobile
show In the Gerga capital. The ropte
will be over a so-called "iatioMal
highway" between New Tork and At-
lants, which was mapped out by pat-
iding cars last month.
The route of the New York-Atlanta
national highway leads across Staten
Island, then to Trenton, crosses the
Delaware river at that pomtt and
thence proceeds to PhIladelph. Prom
Philadelphia,. the route leads almost
due westward to Gettybaurg via Lan-
caster and Mew York. At Gettyaburg
the route turns southward to Hagers-
town thence to, W.
Va. and from thf to W uchemster.
From this point the route follows the
tamous Seanandoah VaO pike to
8wseton From Stkun on the route
proeeeew southward via the National
Bridge to Roaeake. South of RomMoke
is a stretch of about iftyz mUes across
the mountains where the worst peads
of the entire route are encountered.
As soon as the highway enters North
arolina better conditions are found.
and there are good roads almost all
the war across the state via Wiaston-
Salem, Greensboro and Charlotte.
Greenville and Anderson are the prin-
cipal towns in Sduth Carolina through
whieh the route passes and entering
Georgia the route prooteda via Roys-
ton. Winder and Lawreneivlle to At-
lanta. the total distance from New
York being 1,045 miles.
