Palatka ila the e oam -- o f of-

Water course in the state. ?at is
about 60 miles from e&MaUna. X
has water and rail mconmmieatln
the railroads couectltg ren the A L;
L.. the F. K C. and tQhe L& a .;e
latter extending from Paifts to I-
con. Ga. In this respect It l 'I,-
ored community and has dome =
to maintain Itself.
W first saw Palatka 2 yean S o.
Then its only means of co unlmatlWl
was by water. The Floida ouTdb;
railroad, of which Major C ent .Wa
the general manager, extended ft-
Palatka to Gainesville. alse extemfig
to Ocala and later built to Brook-D.
In those day. Palatka wa a tsrtvb
bustling city. The St. Johan r velWW
alive with boats plying between JeO-
sonville and Sanford. suppipjti ,!i o
that country with transportation. PN-
latka then. as now. was eabqe rtea
for thp Oklawaha river boats plyla
between that city and SUlvAr 3prlk
These facilities and interestr -s ani
Palatka the meat Important oar
trade in all the country round.
But as time wore on the railroads
that existed and were afterwards bit
to Palatka and made that cty thbit
headquarters, were absorbed and OB
solidated Into Mw that eoursd tha
state from end to end and male Ja k-
sonville the gateway to the state. 14
those days orange growing was very-
thing. Its touch was to enrich every-
body. There seemed but one thought
and purpose In those days and that
was to possess an orange grove.
Then came the destructive fromes.
Palatka was no excepton.L It was
surrounded with magnificent ev
which were tributary to that towa 8a
felt the electric current of Its dirou-
lation. Palatka had, a tr-nsUtlo t ,
like all other towns, from tOe reIF to
within a few years ago. It Wad to
adapt Itself to new condltIona and a"r-
-roundlngs. The process was slow, tAI-
lous and trying, which Is general the
nation over. Palatka survived the or-
deal and for the test that is afny
born It plodded slowly from the lo
of despair to the plateau of suee e
is now girdling Its lin@n foar a tr
Marathon commercial race. May pros-
perity attend her.
To see a town from the car wsdom
and Judge It from that standpoint is a
different proposition from stopping off,
walking its streets and CoamRa .B
views and getting Impresiona ofts lats
citizens. The former we had dome frO
many years and naturally our ufee-
slons were superficial. TheltIste
course we pursued this week. whenm at-
tendinv the good roads C"Ve e., -ad
our observations were certainly very
gratifying for on every hand were sm
evidences of municipal pride, growth
and prosperity.
In a window of a bookstore we saw
a large placard on which were thee
figures. "Population 6,22," made by
that excellent newspaper man ad di-
rectory compiler, Jesse SBrts, Gatae-
vllle. Now Jeosse has the renihtatla ef
never sleeping and hence he nust have
canvassed Palatka with his eyes opem.
We have already noted the largest
of Palatka's municipal imtprovelets
19 blocks of vitrified brick streets sad
12 miles of cement sidewalks, with a
new $80.000 pumping works, the lease
of the water rights to a private O-
poratlon expiring within a year. when
the city proposes to secure for tle tax
payers whatever profit there Isn the
Plant.
We also noted th tact that the
county of Putnam bonded Itself for
810,000. This money wili be used for
a new courthouse to cost SUSAN, but
some of the citizens are dhleaid
with this allotment and think they
should have one to rank with Marion's,
if not go them one BIetter. These wide
awake and progressive citizens of Pa-
latka and Putnam county have our
approval of gratifylng thehr lmadable
ambition. Part of the bond umoey Is
to erect a tree wagon bridge acrss the
St. Johns river, to cost soe 9o -
and connect the Irish potato 'ww1.

The Tlilgkman shingle industry toe i
no small affair. Palatka ejoys a-
siderable wholesale trade a-04 th o
der Is it does not do more of It:' wrl
the ftvarable water rates It majoy. It
.has a number of subetantlal eom r-

Every Indication points to the B t
Palatka's continued growth and -o"

At this particular jucturet, l *
