It Is so refreshing to havoc from the
pen of our esteemed contemporary
that "vanity and boastfulness are not
Abe weakness or" the Ocala Banner.
This statement is In harmonious ac-
cord with the delightful weather wi
are experiencing this season, and Is
also refreshing. We thank our es-
teemed contemporary for him unadul-
terated pity for he says:
"Our envious contemporary cannot
held the mean spirit running through
-his nature into rubection, and. like
-lepard's spots, it will show itself. 'He
le to be pitied rather than censured."
That be mistook the source of this pity
is too evident and for the purpose of
refreshing our esteemed contempor-
ary's memory, we respectfully refer
him to the Ales of his own paper, pub-
tised during the controversy of a doz-
em years ago, when with the spirit
that hedges around the sacredness of
the divine right of kings. the earth was
his and all the fullness therof. because
Frank Harris published th- oldest pa-
per hnq P on county and It was the
light -f presumption for a little noew
*ptaart to ask for part of the county
Iatronage. Times change, but in this
particular the leopard's spots of our.
*steeled contemporary, remain all
wool and a yard wide. and those who
run can read them without a magnify-
ing glass. Let the Star remind the
Banner that the "Florida History" of
Mr. Whitfield was also kindly sent to
all the other papers In the state, and
a number of tho-rn published it before
the Banner.

WHAT CATALqGUE HOUSES
WILL NOT DO
.. -w o
The catalogue house business is the
quack doctor of commerce, It prom-
lies much and guarantees nothing.
Uke patent medicines the directions
are always on the outside and you
have to buy a non-returnable pack-
age before you can find out what they
arA.
No catalogue house helped to build
the little white school house in your
district or turnpike the road just OaMt
your door. No catalogue house ever
took you by the hand when you 1wre
In distress and tqld you to let tfat
little account go until after harvest
next year. No catalogue house ever
sold you a vehicle and spent every
cent of its profits right in the com-
munity where you and vour neigh-
bors could get it back again. No cat-
alogue house ever shoved Its patent
leather shoes under your table and re-
joiced witoyou when yo'i were glad,
nor spoke encouraging words In af-
fliction., nor stood with uncovered
A -beside the graves when yuur
chldlren died.
No, the catalogue house is after the
money. Every dollar it gets its hands
, on will be jerked out of your neigh-
blbhbed forever. The catalogue house
may bear upon its face the semblance
of friendship, but no human heart
beats under its cloak of hypocrisy.
Sentiment to It Is unknown. The
whole Institution Is as cold and blood-
.e-,as a corpse.
S, All of the catalogue houses In
C.INsteodom would not increase the
SvalMe of your farm a cent. They are
- paralte to whom life Is only bossi-
111e 01 lsmi as they can suck blood
ut -of the communities, to the up-
Sbulng obLwhich they contribute
nothing. They create no local market
for the products you have for sale.
.They have no property in your county
which can be assessed to help bear
your burden of taxation.
Tour local dealer needs neitheP ad-
vocate nor defense. His methods rest
upon principles that have bulk up In
this country a system of internal
commerce which is the marvel and
admiration of the world. His balf-
nese Is legitimate because Its success
contributes to the' general prosperity
of the community that built it up.
Honestly, now, don't you really pat
yourself on the back when your
money in such a way that in supply-
1ig your own wants you help build
up the neighborhood in which you
live? Of course you do, and you act
on that idea yourself, but the trouble
is you don't talk it enough to friends.
5teu4' by your local dealer as he
l by ~you with his time, his skill
and his money. He helps to build up
the community and he makes it a bet-
ter place for you both to live in.
E own suoeess depends upn your
prosperity. He has no use for mave-
-ricks--unbranded Junk. He swears by
-the goods branded with the trade-
mark of the most skilled manufactur-
Sers on earth-goods the like of which

no other generation ever saw. and he
the an abiding faith in the theory
that the best vehicles in the world to-
4ay are none too good for that major
' general of all the industries--the
American eltisen.-Merchant and
Manufacturers.

Bditor W. B. Powell, of the St. Pe-
tersburg Independent, (re-tired), Is In

beautiful city.

Frank Walpole. the red-handed rooe-
ter of the Manatee Record, Is whoop-
Ing 'er up for bonds to pave the
streets of hbi village. When Frank
geta a move on he always sets the
pace.
