ood Road From Daytona to
De Leon Springs.-WeUl
Worth a Visit.

Two automobile loads from Day-
tona spent last Sunday at DeLeon
Springs, the fabled place for which
the immortal Ponce de Leon so long
searched. The party comprised Mr.
and Mrs. J. D. C. Morris, little Miss
Elsie Morris, Mrs.W.W. M. Hankins,
little Miss Myra Maxine Hankins
and her still younger sister, Mr. and
Mrs. F. J. Niver, Donald Niver, Mr.
ad Mrs. T. E. Fitzgerald and John
H. Copp, of Geneva, Ohio. Iq addi-
tion to the above party Mr an4 Mrs
W. W. Austin and children and
several persons from Daytona Beach
and Seabreeze spent Sunday at this
delightful retreat.
If more Daytonians realized the
beauties of DeLeon Springs and its
easy access, more of them would
visit it. The place is situated about
six miles northeast of DeLand.
You take the DeLand road until.
you pass the camp of the DeLand i
Naval Stores Co., where instead of
turning on the Boulevard you follow
the pinestraw road to the right for 5
miles, passing the town of DeLeon.
Aside from being one of the prettiest!
drives in the State, the spring
itself is attractive. Sixty thous-i
and gallons of sparkling water bub-
b'em out of the ground every minute,
r a total of 84,C.00,00t0 gallons in
twenty-four hours. The grounds
are nicely arranged, bath houses
md a refreshment stand being in
evidence.

Base Ball Orounds.
What appears to be a very favor-
able proposition toward the estab-
lishment of a base ball park has
been made by parties owning a
suitable parcel of land on the south
side of Live Oak avenue, a short'
distance west of the railroad. It is,
in fact, the old ball grounds, once
owned by Dr. J. M. Wallace. Their
piece is 355 feet square, of which
330x355 is already cleared. t -is
of easy access, with good road on'
the north and west sides.
The proposal is to make a stock i
company, in which the owners of
the land will take shares, and to!
fence the place, erect grand stands
and whatever else is necessary. It
will be a holding company with
some good business man selected
for president. Long time will be
given on the payments and the offer
stands open until July 1st. If you
are interested in this question of
base ball for the city make ita point
to talk with Manager W. (. Nash
about this offer.

Abuse of Horses.
There is complaint that horses
are being overdriven and abused
by some of the colored people. This
complaint is common every summer,.
for, with the leisure time, the col-
ored people do more driving, especli-
ally between the neighboring towns
of Port Orange and Ormond during
the evenings and on Sundays and
some of them are hard and cruel
drivers. The marshal can not be
everywhere and it is the duty of
the citizens themselves to put a stop
to the abuse of horses, if possible,
when it comes to their attention and A
if they cannot accomplish that Pend.
then notify the marshal of the case
and give him their support.

FRANCHISE PROPOSED FOR

THE TELEPHONE COMPANY.

Will Be Ratified or Rejected by

the Electors of Daytona

Next Month.
Besides the usual routine business
transacted at the meeting of the
City Council Monday evening, sev-
eral matters of importance to the
general public were before the body.
An ordinance granting a franchise
to tie East Florida Telephonk Com-
pany was passed on third ad final
reading and will be suljtted to
the electors for ratificatiolr rejec-
tion next month.
An ordinance directing that all
dogs be muzzled when on the streets
was passed on first and second read-
ings.
Architect Reidy, of the firm of
Robinson & Reidy, appeared before
the council protesting against the
unfair treatment which he alleged
that the school trustees dished out
to him. Mr. Reidy stated that his
plans for the proposed new school
house had been accepted, but that
afterwards the trustees awarded the
contract for plans to another archi-
tect, but failed to notify him or
return his plans; he stated that he
had written a number of letters but
was unable to get a reply and finally
was obliged to send a man to Day-
Stona to get his plans. Mr. Reidy, it
is understood, contemplates bring-
ing a suit against the city for dam-
ages.
In response to a request from the
council the school trustees sub-
mitted a report to the conucil as to
why work on the school house was
h being delayed. The report set forth
about the same facts as .appears in
an article on the subject elsewhere
in today's Gazette-News.

recommend to him some one who
would secure the animals for him
and take charge of them at the park.
Mr. Spring suggested that J. W.
Booth would be the very man for
the position so Mr Werner saw Mr.
Booth and arranged with him to se-
cure and take north a large collec-
tion of alligators and what other
animals lie could readily pick up.
Mr. Booth has for some time been

Several Alleged Dispensers of
"Booe" Were Arrested This
Week and Bound Over.
Sunday morning about ten o'clock
Justice H. T. Titus arrested Shad-
wick James, a colored citizen of
Newtown, on the charge of selling
liquor. Three barrels of beer and a
case of whiskey were found in the
place and confiscated.
Sunday evening Justice Titus, ac-
companied by Marshal John Myers
and Gad Taylor, a colored deputy
marshal, made two more arrests in
the colored settlement of Midway,
both of these men, however, were
white. Mr. Titus sent a colored
man in for liquor giving him a
marked bill to pay for it. The man
got the goods an returned with
the change, when the proprietors of
the place, C. C. Holland and Martin
Butler, were at once arrested.
Monday morning at the prelimi-
nary hearing before Justice Titus
they were bound over to the Crimi-
nal Court. James and Holland
plead guilty and although Butler
plead not guilty, Holland claimed
he was his partner in the business.
Thursday S. E. Morris, proprie-
t>r of Keating's Casino, Daytona
Beach, was arrested on the 'ame
c' large. He was bound over to
the Criminal Court under a bond of
$350.
Yesterday Henry Alexander, of
North Beach street, was before Jus-
tice Titus on the same charge but
the case was continued until next
Monday. .
Chas. Berlin was arrested yester-
day on complaint of Martin Butler
on the charge of carrying concealed
weapons and bound over to the
Criminal Court.
Justice Titus is determined, he
says, to close up all blind tigers,
and feels it his duty to do all in his
power to that end.

Three Wells Completed.-Tower
Foundations Under Way
And Iron Pipe Here.
The waterworks business is pro-
gressing very satisfactorily in all
respects. The third well was com-
pleted Thursday morning by the
contractors, Ballough & Melton, who
are now at work on the fourth and
last one. The first well is flowing
at the rate of 400 gallons per minute
at the ground surface and each suc-
ceeding well it is said shows some-
thing of an increase over that, and
as 1500 gallons will be abundant
for the present there is promise of
more than sufficient water, if the
fourth well holds up to the average,
which it no doubt will. The water
at this head is found at a depth of
155 feet and nothing seems to be
gained by going lower.
Hough & Bond, who have the con-
tract for the masonry work, are en-
gaged in putting in the foundations
for the water tower. At the four
corners, excavations have been made
several feet in depth, going below
the marl, and in these sixteen pine
piles are being put down to a depth
of eight or nine feet. They are cut
off below the water line and capped
with the concrete work, forming a
splendid foundation.
Eighteen cars, of a total of lifty,
of the iron pipe have already ar-
rived and the pipe is being distrib-
uted about the city, and right here
it might be well to caution the driv-
ers of vehicles, especially automo-
biles, to watch for this pipe when
turning out at night. Robert
Weaver, who is superintending tle
work for Contrator McRae. of At-
lanta, is using all possible care in
placing the pipe clear of the rad-
%way, but due caution should be
used by drivers.
Early in the week Mr. Weaver
had some friction with the colored
men engaged to unload and dis-

tribute the pipe, over the question
of hours and wages and the men
