Chinese Cabbage Cultivar Trial

I. D. Hancik and J. M. White

This report summarizes the evaluations of 26 cultivars/breeding lines of
Chinese cabbage. Entries were evaluated for adaptability to central Florida's
spring production conditions. Fertilizer and pesticides were applied as
suggested in the Extension Service Control Guide.

The seedbed was sown on January 22, 1990. Seedlings were transplanted to
a Myakka fine sand on February 28, 1990. A randomized block design was used with
a single-row plot 25' long x 2.5' wide, and 11" in-row spacing. Two duplicate
trials, one transplanted and one direct-seeded, were planted. There were three
replications in each trial.

Harvesting began on April 27, 1990, and ended on May 7, 1990: Each entry
was harvested when it was judged to be mature; plots wer ;%;,;J;vBg only once.
Yield data and other characteristics rated in this trial areib~ jnd in Table 2;
weather data are recorded in Table 1.

Explanation of Table Headings:

Yield: expressed as 50 Ib crates and hundred weight/acre (marketable heads only)

Plants harvested (%): based on a maximum of 15 heads/plot

Days to first harvest: no. of days from transplanting/direct-seeding to harvest

Summary:

Yield, expressed as crates/acre, ranged from 750-142 (average 425) in the
transplanted trial and 792-39 (average 420) in the direct-seeded trial. Of the
highest-yielding entries, Harbin, Spectrum, China Flash (Sakata and Abbott &

SCobb), Blues (American Takii and Abbott & Cobb), China Express, and Hopkin
finished in the top 10 (by weight) in both trials.

Although Shanghai yielded well in the transplanted trial, it produced the
second lowest yield in the direct-seeded trial. HMX 8201 finished in the bottom
five entries in both trials.

Yields were comparable in the transplanted and direct-seeded trials,
however, the transplanted trial was ready for harvest an average of two days
earlier than the direct-seeded trial.
