Alternaria Leaf Blight Tolerance and Other Discriptors for Plant Introductions
of Daucus spp. obtained at Sanford, Florida

J. 0. Strandberg', P. W. Simon2, and M. J. Bassett3;

INTRODUCTION This report presents data obtained from a planting of the US Plant
Introduction Daucus collection (439 accessions) at Sanford, Florida, during the
1987-88 winter season. Our primary goal was to evaluate PI accessions for
resistance to Alternaria dauci; a secondary goal was to look for characters or
markers that might be useful in genetic studies. Information on relative
tolerance to Alternaria leaf blight and observations on root type, time of
flowering, flower characteristics, and growth habit and other descriptors is
presented.

METHODS Carrot seeds were planted in a sandy soil (Mayakka fine sand) at
Sanford, Florida, on October 4, 1987. Rows were spaced 76 cm apart and planted
on beds 20 cm high. No herbicides were used but a systemic nematicide (Nemacur)
was applied in the furrow to control Root-knot nematodes. No other pesticides
were applied. Plants were examined for useful early seedling markers soon after
emergence. A portion of the roots from each plot was lifted and examined
in late February of 1988. Alternaria leaf blight readings were made in late
February and March. Plants were observed weekly for flowering from February to
June 1988 when the experiment was concluded.

RESULTS No useful early seedling markers were found, but several interesting
flower and root types were observed. Alternaria dauci apparently infested the
seeds of a number of accessions, because Alternaria leaf blight damage was
evident in several of the plots within 1 month after planting, and a severe
epidemic soon developed over the entire plot area.

Our observations are summarized in Tables 1 and 2. The information
presented in these tables was has been electronically stored and used to create
a data base for carrot (Daucus) that can be revised or modified as new
requirements are identified and new information is obtained. The present
collection of Daucus PI accessions is now much larger than when we evaluated at
it in 1987. Therefore, this information on the Daucus PI collection is currently
incomplete.

From the preliminary data base, a number of useful groupings of PI
accessions for root color, flower color, Alternaria tolerance, and other
characters have been prepared and are presented in Tables 3 6.
