ROOT-KNOT CONTROL IN CALADIU4M TBERS

In laboratory and greenhouse tests, complete control of root-knot nematodes in
caladium tubers was obtained by immersion of the tubers or the seed chips in water
at 500 C (1220 F) for periods of 20-30 minutes, whereas water at 430 C (109,40 F)
or 45 C (1130 F) for 40 minutes did not control the nematodes' Germination was de-
layed slightly by the 500 C treatment.

Immersion of tubers in emulsions of parathion, malathion, and the e;perimental
nematocides C-1000 and C-4120 from Chemagro Corporation, SD 4965 from Shell Develop-
ment Companyo and W-24 from Wyandotte Chemicals Corporation did not affect germination
but failed to give effective control DBCP (Nemagon) did not give effective nematode
control and was phytotoxic to the tubers,
