We evaluated 14 hybrid carrot lines and cultivars in replicated trials on
Lauderhill muck for performance and adaptability to Florida fresh market production
conditions. The trial was conducted in cooperation with Zellwin Farms, a local
grower. Seeds were hand planted January 26, 1979, on beds 30 cm high and 66 cm
wide. Beds were 114 cm on center. The normal culture is to plant 4 rows on each
side of the bed. We planted one row on each side of the bed. A randomized complete
block design with five replications was used. Each plot was one row by 91 cm long.
At planting, 100 seeds per plot was sown and thinned at the 3rd true leaf stage to
30 plants. The grower maintained the plots as he did his field which surrounded
the plots. Harvest data were taken 110 days after planting (May 16, 1979).

Summary data for the trial are found in Table 1. Only No. 5 (3430 X 3316) X
HC 270, was significantly higher in marketable weight than both the standard lines,
Fancy Pack and High Color 9. No. 12, 4367 X 6274 was a Nantes type and considered
Stood short for our fresh market product. The average marketable root length of the
first replication of No. 12 was 14.9 cm where Fancy Pack was 21.5 cm, and No. 5 was
22.3 cm. When all factors were considered, lines Nos. 5, 4, and 6 were the best
overall carrots.
