BROCCOLI CULTIVAR EVALUA ION j1iiJ ..

J. M. White and J. 0. Str -kdb r uiov
Assistant Horticulturist and Plant PathTlogist- ..i,~

Six broccoli cultivars or lines were evaluated for central Florida's 1979-80
winter growing season on a Myakka fine sand. Seeds were hot water treated at 50C
for 25 minutes on October 24, 1979. Seedbeds were hand planted on October 26.
Plants were transplanted on December 6, 1979, at AREC-Sanford on soil previously
fumigated with Shell D-D to control nematodes. Plants were spaced 30 cm apart
within the row with rows on 76 cm centers. Plots were 15 m long with a total of
50 plants per plot. Overhead irrigation was used after transplanting and as
needed. Insecticides were applied as needed and fertilizer and other cultural
imputs were made in accordance to state recommendations. No disease control
measures were used in the field.

The first harvest was on February 15, 1980, and the last on March 3. Each
line was harvested when the heads were judged mature. Weights of plots were
based on the first harvest weights only. The number of mature heads were counted
for the subsequent 2 or 3 'harvest'. A sample of five heads were randomly
selected from the first harvest for size measurements. The data collected are
summarized in Table 1.
