Chinese Cabbage Variety Trials, 19880-89

This report summarizes the evaluations of 9 lines of napa-type Chinese
cabbage and was carried out in conjunction with our annual cabbage variety trial.
Entries were evaluated for adaptability to Florida's winter produciton
conditions. Fertilizer and. pesticides were applied as suggested in the Extension
Service Control Guide.

Seeds were hot-water treated at 500C for 30 minutes and allowed to dry
prior to planting. The seedbed was sown on October 6, 1988. Seedlings were
transplanted to a Myakka fine sand on November 8, 1988.

A randomized block design was used with a single row plot size of 25' long
x 2.5' wide and 11-inch in-row spacing. There were five replications.
Harvesting began on January 5, 1989, and ended on January 24, 1989. Each entry
was harvested when it was judged to be mature and plots were harvested several
times.

Although one line; AMX 22018, failed to germinate, the remainder of the
lines tested in this study seemed well adapted to central Florida's growing
conditions. AMX 22020 was more susceptible to Alternaria injury than the other
lines tested, however, disease injury was not severe enough to be a limiting
factor in this study. AMX 22005 had a rough leaf texture with small spines on
the underside of the leaves.

Uniformity (plant/head) and head cover: rated on a scale 1-5, where 1-poor
and 5-excellent.

Head shape: P=pointed; OV-oval; Ov-P=oval to pointed; variable-head shape
was too variable to be accurately characterized.
