SPRING SLICER CUCUMBER CULT RIALV_

A spring slicer cucumber cultivar tri a conducted on Myakk fine
sand in Sanford, Florida, as one location "h o tfifen Regional
Cultivar Evaluation Program. Beds, 1.5 m wide, wee-made &OF1 acted
with Mocap at 2.2 kg/ha for the control of nematodes, a pre'plant-broad-
cast application of a 5-5-8 fertilizer at a rate of 1,120 kg/ha was made.
Seeds of 15 cultivars and lines were hand planted on March 31, 1982. The
week of April 8, 16.5 cm of rain plus hail in excess of 2 cm in diameter
destroyed the planting. Thirteen lines were replanted on April 14, 1982,
after preparing the field as above. One row plots, 7.6 m long with 1.5 m
wide beds 7 cm high, were used with 4 replications in a randomized com-
plete block design. Plants were thinned to a 30.5 cm spacing within the
row. Applications of a 10-4-10 fertilizer at 560 kg/ha were applied on
May 5 and May 13.

No fungicide was used. One application of an insecticide was
applied on May 17, some worm injury was noted after mid-harvest. Some
mildew was noted, but did not become a serious problem. Irrigation was
used three times from mid-May to early June. Eight harvests were made
from May 28 to June 25.

Five cultivars had a higher yield than Spring 440-S which usually
has the highest yield in these trials (Table 1). Other data collected
is found in Table 1. All of the cultivars tested looked good and had
good yields except Poinsett 76. Poinsett 76 had lower yields in this
trial than it normally does. The trial was conducted later in the spring
than normal.
