A fall slicer cucumber cultivar trial was conducted on fyakka fine
sand in Sanford, Florida, as one location in the Southern Regional
Variety Evaluation Program. Beds, 1.5 m wide, were made and treated
with Mocap at 2.2 kg/ha for control of nematodes. A preplant broadcast
application of a 5-5-8 fertilizer at a rate of 1,120 kg/ha was made.
Seeds of 21 cultivars and lines were hand planted on September 10, 1980.
One row plots, 7.6 m long with 1.5 m wide beds 7 cm high, were used with
4 replications in a randomized complete block design. Plants were
thinned to a 30.5 cm spacing within-the-row. One application of a
10-4-10 fertilizer at 550 kg/ha was applied 4 weeks after planting.
Overhead irrigation was used 4 times for a total of 8 cm of water.
Rainfall during the growing season was below normal with only 5.8 cm.
The season was considered very dry and slightly warmer than normal.
No insecticide or fungicide was used. Some damage due to pickle
worms was noted. Target spot and some mildew were found early in the
season. Target spot became a serious problem and along with low soil
moisture and low fertility reduced vine growth and yield potential.
The first of 5 harvests was on October 22 and the last on November 6,
1980. The summary for the data recorded is found in Table 1.
