Research Report SAN-92-02 August 1991

BROCCOLI CULTIVAR TRIAL, 1991

I. D. Hancik & J. M. White

This report summarizes the evaluations of 22 cultivars/breeding lines of
broccoli. Entries were evaluated for adaptability to Florida's spring production
conditions. Fertilizer and pesticides were applied as suggested in the Extension
Service Control Guide.

The seedbed was sown on January 9, 1991. Seven lines (Galleon, Sultan,
Augusta, Gaelic Pride, Early Emerald, Ninja, and Premium Crop) had to be
replanted on January 17, 1991, due to animal damage in the seedbed. Seedlings
were transplanted to a Myakka fine sand on February 28, 1991. A randomized block
design was used with a single-row plot 25' long x 2.5' wide, and 11" in-row
spacing. Each treatment was replicated four times.

Marketable heads of broccoli were harvested on May 1, May 10, and May 17,
1991. Yield data and other characteristics rated in this trial are found in
.Table 1; weather data are recorded in Table 2.

*Summary

Yield, expressed as crates/acre, ranged from 225-0 (average 97). Of the
five top-yielding entries (Sprinter, Southern Comfort, Brigadier, Pinnacle, and
Sultan) only Sprinter possessed both good head color and an excellent head shape
and general appearance. Galleon also produced attractive heads with medium bead
size, but marketable yield was significantly less than Sprinter.

Days to harvest ranged from 62-78 days from transplanting with an average
of 70 days. The early varieties (Ninja, Gaelic Pride, and Early Emerald) yielded
well, but head shape and color were poor.

This report is not intended to recommend one variety over another, but
rather is meant as a general guideline for variety selection. Different field
locations, planting dates, and cultural practices may alter the performance of
these broccoli lines; growers should be mindful of this variability when
selecting a new variety, and small test areas of new varieties may be advisable.

Explanation of Table Headings:

yield: expressed as 23 lb crates and hundred weight (cwt)/acre (marketable heads
only)

days to first harvest: number of days from transplanting to harvest

average number of harvests: maximum of three harvests however, some
replications were not harvested, and all replications were not harvested
the same number of times resulting in numbers less than zero and
fractions in this data column.
