Research Report SAN 91-01 July 1990

Broccoli Cultivar Trial, 1990

I. D. Hancik & J. M. Whit .

This report summarizes the evaluations of 24 cultivars/breeding lines of
'broccoli. Entries were evaluated for adaptability to Florida's spring production
conditions. Fertilizer and pesticides were applied as suggested in the Extension
Service Control Guide.

The seedbed was sown on January 22, 1990. Seedlings were transplanted to
a Myakka fine sand on March 1, 1990. A randomized block design was used with a
single-row plot 25' long x 2.5' wide, and 11" in-row spacing. Two duplicate
trials, one on plastic mulch and one on bare ground were planted. There were
three replications in each trial.

Marketable heads of broccoli were harvested on April 27, May 2, and May 7,
1990. Yield data and other characteristics rated in this trial are found in
Table 1; weather data are recorded in Table 2.

Explanation of Table Headings:

yield: expressed as 23 Ib crates and hundred weight/acre (marketable heads
only)

plants harvested (%): based on 27 plants/plot

days to first harvest: number of days from transplanting to harvest

number of harvests: heads were cut as they reached maturity (only main
heads harvested); plots were harvested several times

Summary:

Yield, expressed as crates/acre, ranged from 511-0 (average-248) in the
non-mulched trial and 363-0 (average-185) in the mulched trial. Of the highest-
yielding entries, AMX 15014, PSX 50785, Brigadier (Abbott & Cobb and Agway), FMX
94, and Zeus finished in the top 10 in both trials. Although PSX 53386 was the
highest-yielding line in the mulched trial it ranked 21 out of 24 entries when
grown on bare ground.

Crown Prince, Greenbelt, and Skiff finished in the bottom five entries in
both trials; Crown Price produced no marketable heads in either trial. Greenbelt
and Skiff produced no marketable heads in the non-mulched and mulched trials,
respectively.

Although yields were generally lower in the mulched trial, these plots were
ready for harvest an average of three days earlier than the non-mulched trial.
