Carrot Variety Trials ITF.A.S. Univ. o0 Florida

R. B. Forbes and J. M. White
Associate Soil Chemist and Assistant Horticulturist

Replicated Trials

The 1976-77 carrot variety tests included some 31 lines of fresh market
carrots and 35 entries in the processor carrot trial. Included in both trials were
standard varieties plus many new hybrids or promising new lines.

Plantings were made at two locations: at Sanford on Leon fine sand, and at
this Center's Zellwood Farm on Everglades mucky peat. The processor lines were
replicated four times at both locations. Fresh market varieties were replicated
four times at Zellwood, but only a single 3-row plot of each variety was planted
for observation at Sanford.

Growing conditions were normal at both locations except for a January cold
snap which brought temperatures in the low 20's. Carrots suffered leaf damage and
were delayed in growth and development. The season was unusual in that blight
(Alternaria sp.) was very light until late in the growing season, and was more
prevalent at Sanford than at Zellwood. No fungicides were applied so as to permit
sufficient disease buildup for blight ratings to be made.

Observational Plantings

Single plot plantings included 24 lines at both Sanford and Zellwood for
observation of plant characters, particularly disease resistance. An additional
84 lines were grown at Zellwood for disease screening in cooperation with Dr.
L. R. Baker, Michigan State University.

Carrot Breeding Lines (Cooperative USDA Florida Program)

Around 200 advanced breeding lines and special selections were grown at
Zellwood for observation of disease resistance, root type, and other plant
characteristics.. A duplicate planting was put in at AREC-Belle Glade through the
cooperation of Dr. V. L. Guzman. From these Florida plantings, selections were
made and roots taken back to Wisconsin for further use in the breeding program to
develop a superior carrot with the disease resistance needed for Florida
production. These cooperative efforts were begun in 1970 with Dr. C. E. Peterson,
USDA Carrot Breeder at Madison, Wisconsin, Dr. J. O. Strandberg, Associate Plant
Pathologist of AREC-Sanford, and Dr. M. J. Bassett of the University of Florida,
Vegetable Crops Department at Gainesville.

A new USDA release for 1977 is CANDY PACK, a fresh market hybrid carrot
adapted mainly to the western production areas. This line was grown in the
1975-76 trials at Zellwood as "USDA Line 512", both in replicated plots and in
long rows in a commercial field. Performance was good, with good quality, but
this line was rather susceptible to blight. A number of the new hybrids in the
USDA-Florida breeding program are showing great promise, so the much hoped-for
Florida hybrid appears closer to reality.
