Replicated Trials

The 1975-76 variety tests included 43 fresh r lfn9 n@. e te
planting of 28 processor varieties. Included in both variety trials were several
standard varieties plus new hybrids or selections of promise. All varieties were
replicated four times in a randomized block design.

Plantings were made in two locations: at Sanford on Leon fine sand, and at
the Center's Zellwood Farm on Everglades mucky peat.

A second replicated trial at Zellwood included 20 advanced breeding lines of
fresh market carrots and three processor carrots, all from Dr. Peterson's USDA
breeding program. Poor stands in a number of these plots interfered with yield
data, but blight readings and descriptive data were obtained. No fungicides were
applied to this planting.

Growing conditions were normal at both locations. Blight (Alternaria sp.)
was not severe until the latter part of the growing season, so only a minimal
spray program was needed to maintain plots until harvest.

Observational Plantings

Some 51 selections and new hybrids were planted in single row plots at beth
locations for observation of plant characters, particularly disease resistance.

In addition, USDA lines 511, 512, and 514 (from Dr. Peterson) were put into
a commercial field with the cooperation of Zellwin Farms. Two quarter-mile
rows of each were planted in a field of Hicolor-9, given regular commercial
care, and dug with a commercial harvester. All three lines were well received
by the packer, although color of the new lines was not quite as deep as that of
Hicolor 9.

Carrot Breeding Lines Cooperative USDA Program

Several hundred advanced breeding lines and special selections were grown
at Zellwood and Sanford for observation of disease resistance and other plant
characters. This effort was part of a cooperative study begun in 1970 with
Dr. C. E. Peterson, USDA, Carrot Breeder (Madison, Wisconsin), Dr. J. O.
Strandberg, Associate Plant Pathologist of AREC-Sanford, and Dr. M. J. Bassett
of the University of Florida Vegetable Crops Department at Gainesville.

No fungicides were used in the observational or disease screening trials.
Blight conditions were moderate to severe toward the latter part of the growing
season, providing a good test for disease resistance.

Carrot Breeding Lines (cooperative USDA program)

The plantings at Zellwood made excellent growth and gave a good opportunity
for selections to be made. Many of the lines showed sufficient promise to retention
in the program and roots were selected to be taken to Madison, Wisconsin, for
further work in building disease resistance and producing a carrot of improved
root quality. The goal of a superior carrot, "tailor-made" for Florida conditions,
seems to be drawing much closer.
