Carrot Variety Trials ,

R. B. Forbes 1977
Associate Soil Chemist

Replicated Trials of Fi

At the Sanford Research Center on Leon fine sand, 34 lines of fresh market
carrots were planted in 3 row plots. There were 10 lines in the processor carrot
trial. All varieties in each trial were replicated 4 times in randomized blocks.

At the Research Center's Zellwood Farm (Everglades mucky peat) there were
37 lines planted in the fresh market trial and 10 lines of processor carrots. All
varieties were replicated 4 times.

Growing conditions were normal at both locations except for somewhat warmer
than average weather during the latter part of the season. Blight (Alternaria sp.)
was present during the latter part of the season, and a minimal fungicide spray
program was used in the replicated trials to maintain plots until harvest.

An additional replicated planting of 8 advanced lines from Northrup-King was
planted in early November at both locations.

Observational Plantings

Some 36 selections and new hybrids were planted in single row plots at both
locations for observation of various plant characters, particularly disease
resistance.

Carrot Breeding Lines (Cooperative USDA Program)

Several hundred advanced breeding lines and planting stocks for observation
of disease resistance and other characters were grown at Zellwood and at
AREC-Belle Glade, in a cooperative study with Dr. J. 0. Strandberg, Associate
Plant Pathologist of this Center, Dr. M. J. Bassett of the Vegetable Crops
Department at the main station in Gainesville, Dr. V. L. Guzman of AREC-Belle
Glade, and Dr. C. E. Peterson, USDA Plant Breeder, Madison, Wisconsin.

An additional group of breeding lines was grown in a disease screening trial
for Dr. L. R. Baker of M. S. U.

No fungicidal sprays were used in any of the observational or disease screen-
ing trials. Blight conditions were moderate to severe, giving a good opportunity
for judging disease resistance.

Carrot Breeding Lines (Cooperative USDA Program)

The plantings at Zellwood and at AREC-Belle Glade, made from duplicate sets
of seed samples both made good growth. With no fungicidal sprays for blight
protection, and disease conditions moderate to severe, a good opportunity was
present for selection of disease resistant, or at least, disease tolerant lines at
both locations.

Many lines showed the type of growth and resistance to warrant further
retention in the program. A number of progenies from lines selected in earlier
Florida trials showed outstanding disease resistance. Root selections were made
to be taken to Madison for further work in building disease resistance and in
refinement of root character.
