RESULTS OF CABBAGE VARI TYTRIALS -
1980-81

This report summarizes the fifteenth in a seies-.of ?an 'al .'prfor-
mance trials for fresh market cabbage at Sanford, Florida. We-evaluated
29 entries in a replicated trial and 93 entries planted in single-row
plots in an observational trial. Entries were evaluated for overall
performance and adaptability to winter production conditions in Florida.
Insecticides and nematicides were applied as needed. Plots were main-
tained and fertilized following Florida State Agricultural Station
recommendations. No fungicides were applied to field plot areas.

Seedbeds were planted on October 21, 1980. Plants were lifted and
transplanted on November 25, 1980. Phenamiphos (Nemacur) was preplant
incorporated at 2.24 kg/ha a.i. A randomized incomplete block design
with 4 replications, each consisting of 15.25 m (50 ft.) of row with
plants spaced 28.8 cm (11.5 in.) in 76 cm (30 in.) rows. Observational
lines were planted in a single 15.25 m (50 ft.) row. Harvesting began
on February 23 and ended on March 25, 1981.

Ratings for resistance to downy mildew, alternaria, black rot, and
several horticultural characteristics were made and summarized in Tables
1 and 2. Black rot was once again introduced in some seedlots and
spread over the plot areas in spite of hot water treatment of all seed
lots. Disease ratings were made once near harvest.
All other ratings were made at harvest.
Several of our ratings are highly subjective, such as flavor,
toughness, wrapper leaf protection, and mechanical harvesting index but
are helpful in comparing varieties. We consider the varieties Rio
Verde, Gourmet, and Abbott & Cobb #5 as standard varieties which presently
best fit Florida grower requirements as evidenced by their large percent-
age of the total seed purchased in Florida. Experimental lines should
be compared with these hybrids if use in Florida is anticipated.

Growing conditions were generally good except for some unusually
cold weather in January. There were 8 days in January 1981 with low
temperatures below freezing including -1.2C (300F), -4.40C (240F),
and -6.7C (20*F) on mornings of January 12, 13, and 14, respectively.
However, prolonged cool weather prior to severe freezes had conditioned
plants and little cold damage was observed.

Black rot O=no damage to leaves; 5=severe damage to wrapper, frame, and
head leaves. Ratings above 2.0 are unsaleable.

Alternaria and Downy mildew rated 0=no disease damage; to 5=severe
disease damage.

Storage rating 1=poor storage characteristics with leaves yellow and
dessicated, abundant leaf necrosis; 5=good storage characteristics with
little or no change in leaf color or texture after 2 weeks at 4-60C.

Black speck index The average incidence of black speck damage on 10 heads
recorded after 2 weeks of storage at 4-60C=no damage; 5=severe damage,
extending to the center of the head (See: Strandberg, et al., 1969. Black
